Background / History
Hiruzen served as Konoha’s Third Hokage and had inherited the village’s policy of integrating clans into the village. During the Uchiha crisis, he resolved that the clan’s disappearance was a necessary sacrifice for peace, believing he was following his teacher’s plans 6. He tacitly permitted Shimura Danzō’s operation against the Uchiha, but Fugaku’s unexpected Mangekyō Sharingan and strength overturned the planned annihilation 7 25.
When Danzō’s modified arm—containing Hashirama Cells and implanted Sharingan—was exposed, Hiruzen realized that Danzō and Orochimaru had concealed further experiments from him 10. Fugaku’s Complete Body Susanoo forced Hiruzen to concede and negotiate compensation, including the transfer of the former Senju Clan Compound to the Uchiha Clan 10 11. Hiruzen later announced Danzō’s death as a sacrifice for the village and began considering abdication 15.
His distrust of the Uchiha deepened as Fugaku strengthened the clan through taijutsu and developed an exclusive Sage Mode. Hiruzen investigated the training with Might Guy and Hyuga Hiashi, but Fugaku’s Sage Mode inflicted severe mental injuries on both visitors 26 35 39.
During the Fourth World War, Hiruzen personally commanded Konoha’s Iwagakure front and fought Ōnoki to a draw. He also sent Asuma and Kurenai to investigate suspicious reports from the Kumogakure battlefield 46 68 69. After the war, public revelations of his complicity in Root’s abuses and human experimentation destroyed his standing among Konoha’s clans 88 94.
Faced with Fugaku’s public demand for abdication, Hiruzen stepped down and nominated Tsunade as his successor. Tsunade’s subsequent defeat cleared the path for Fugaku’s candidacy 94 97. Refusing to accept Fugaku’s accession, Hiruzen ambushed him with elite Sarutobi Clan jōnin and attempted to use the Dead Demon Consuming Seal. Fugaku disrupted the technique with a soul-attacking sound wave and killed him before the seal could be completed 98 99 106.
Appearance
Hiruzen is an elderly shinobi who wears the Hokage’s robes and hat while performing official duties. He is frequently depicted smoking a pipe in moments of pressure or contemplation.
- Wears the ceremonial attire of the Third Hokage.
- Carries a pipe, which he repeatedly uses while considering political and military problems 14 26.
- Uses a Crystal Ball to perform the Telescope Technique 35.
- Wields Enma King, commonly transformed into an adamantine staff 10 98.
Personality
Hiruzen is politically cautious, observant, and deeply concerned with Konoha’s stability. He investigates perceived threats personally, monitors the Uchiha Clan through the Telescope Technique, and consults specialists such as Might Guy and Hyuga Hiashi when he lacks expertise 7 35 36.
His dedication to the village is inseparable from a willingness to rationalize severe measures. He viewed the Uchiha Clan’s disappearance as a sacrifice for peace and tolerated Danzō’s actions until their consequences became impossible to ignore 6 25 94. When confronted with Fugaku’s power, he was capable of yielding and negotiating, but he never fully abandoned his belief that Fugaku was too dangerous to remain in Konoha 10 48 99.
Hiruzen also displays regret over his failures. He reflects on not preventing the Uchiha massacre, recognizes the lack of suitable successors among his students, and eventually attempts to relinquish the Hokage position 14 32. His final actions reveal both desperation and resolve: rather than accept Fugaku’s succession, he chooses assassination and a suicidal sealing technique 98 99.
Abilities & Skills

- Personally led the Sarutobi Clan against Iwagakure during the Fourth World War 46.
- Supported Konoha’s forces directly when Ōnoki entered the battlefield 68.
- Could endure Fugaku’s Sage Mode long enough to withdraw, though he suffered severe mental injury 39.
- Was overwhelmed in direct combat by Fugaku’s Sage Mode-enhanced strength 98.
Telescope Technique
Hiruzen uses the Telescope Technique through his Crystal Ball to observe distant locations.
- Witnessed Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan through the technique, reigniting his suspicions over the Nine-Tails Incident 7.
- Monitored the Uchiha Clan’s movements before their deployment to the Kumogakure front 48.
- Used the technique for covert surveillance, including observing Fugaku’s enlightenment process 35.
Earth Release

- Began the seal after concluding that Fugaku had to be removed from Konoha 99.
- Continued casting despite suffering a soul-targeting sonic attack from Fugaku 99.
- Failed to complete the technique before Fugaku exploited the delay 99.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Enma King — Sentient summon and combat partner who can transform into an adamantine staff. Enma blocked Fugaku’s blade, fought alongside Hiruzen, and attempted to protect him while engulfed in Sage Fire Sun Flame Seal flames 10 98 99.
- Crystal Ball — Medium used to perform the Telescope Technique 35.
- Pipe — Regularly used while reviewing intelligence, making political decisions, or dealing with the Uchiha problem 14 26.
Relationships
- Shimura Danzō — Former teammate, adviser, and Root leader. Hiruzen initially tried to have Danzō taken to the hospital after his defeat, but ultimately accepted that Danzō could not be spared 11 12.

- Jiraiya — Former student and preferred successor candidate. Hiruzen summoned him back to Konoha and asked him either to succeed him or locate Tsunade 25 32.
- Tsunade — Former student and Hiruzen’s nominated successor after he agreed to step down 32 94.
- Sarutobi Asuma — His son. Hiruzen assigned Asuma to investigate the Kumogakure front, balancing intelligence needs with a desire to keep him away from the Iwagakure battlefield 69 82.
- Might Guy — Trusted Konoha shinobi whom Hiruzen considered one of the village’s hidden trump cards. He enlisted Guy to investigate the Uchiha Clan’s taijutsu training 35 36.
- Hyuga Hiashi — Clan head consulted alongside Guy during Hiruzen’s investigation of the Uchiha training program; both were injured by Fugaku’s Sage Mode 35 39.
- Enma King — Loyal summon and weapon. Enma voiced concern over Hiruzen’s condition and risked his life to prevent Fugaku from interrupting the Dead Demon Consuming Seal 98 99.

Loss of the Hokage Position
Fugaku’s campaign exposes Hiruzen’s connection to Root’s abuses, human experimentation, and Danzō’s actions. Under pressure from Fugaku and the village’s clans, Hiruzen abdicates and nominates Tsunade, but Fugaku’s support ultimately prevails 88 94 97.
Assassination Attempt and Death
Unable to accept Fugaku’s accession, Hiruzen ambushes him with Sarutobi Clan elites. After losing the direct battle, he attempts the Dead Demon Consuming Seal; Fugaku disrupts the casting and kills him, prompting the Uchiha Clan’s purge of the Sarutobi Clan 98 100 106.
Trivia
- Hiruzen regarded Might Guy as a loyal and trusted reserve strength for Konoha 35.
- He privately judged none of his three former students to be an easy successor: Jiraiya avoided responsibility, Tsunade was burdened by gambling and personal trauma, and Orochimaru had defected after Danzō’s influence 32.
- His use of the Telescope Technique for peeping mirrors Jiraiya’s behavior, though Hiruzen considers his own method more “professional” 35.
