Tsunade felt a tingling sensation where his fingertips touched her. It spread down her entire arm in an instant, making her heart skip a beat.
This kind of intimate contact was far beyond what was appropriate between a teacher and her student.
She should have pulled away at once. She might even have punched him.
But looking at the genuine worry in Uchiha Ling's eyes and feeling the warmth of his palm, she found herself almost reluctant to let go of the comfort and support in that moment.
That was right. Her hand was trembling.
Not because she feared the war, but because of the turmoil and embarrassment inside her.
Somehow, this disciple of hers—usually so calm and composed, yet so observant—had noticed.
"I..." Tsunade parted her lips, but found her voice a little hoarse.
Tsunade stopped trying to pull away and merely turned her face aside, though the tips of her ears flushed an even deeper red.
"I'm just... a little cold," she said, offering a flimsy excuse that even she didn't believe.
Seeing Tsunade show a rare, bashful side so at odds with her usual bold demeanor, Uchiha Ling felt something stir in his heart.
Uchiha Ling didn't call her out on the excuse. Instead, he went along with it, clasping her hand a little more tightly as if he really meant to share his warmth with her.
"Teacher," Uchiha Ling said again, his voice low and resonant, carrying a strangely soothing quality. "Please don't worry. I'll take care of myself. I promise I'll come back alive. After all..."
Uchiha Ling paused, the faintest smile tugging at his lips, tinged with youthful pride. "I haven't learned everything you can teach me, and I haven't truly surpassed you yet. How could I let myself die on the battlefield so easily?"
It sounded like the defiance of a student who refused to lose. But in the intimate atmosphere of the moment, with their hands clasped together, it also felt like a solemn promise about their future.
Tsunade's heart beat even faster.
She could clearly feel the scorching warmth of Uchiha Ling's palm, as if it seeped through her skin and burned straight into her heart.
She could even smell his fresh scent, mingled with sunshine and sweat.
It had been a very long time since she'd experienced such close attention from a man.
Perhaps the last time had been before Dan died.
At the thought of Dan, Tsunade's heart gave a sharp pang, and that familiar urge to numb herself with alcohol and gambling surged up again.
But the firm touch on her wrist somehow pulled her back from the brink of that familiar descent.
Tsunade took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. This time, she didn't look away. She turned back to meet Uchiha Ling's gaze.
Most of her usual clarity had returned to her eyes, but deep within them lay a softness she hadn't even noticed herself.
"Don't give me that glib talk," Tsunade said, trying to sound like her usual self.
"The battlefield isn't a game, and it's nothing like the little scuffles you got into back in the village. Those Cloud Village guys and Sunagakure fanatics aren't easy opponents. Don't get cocky!"
Her warning was stern, as befitted a teacher, but she didn't loosen her grip.
"I know." Uchiha Ling nodded, his expression turning serious as well. "I won't underestimate any enemy. Besides, I still have plenty of trump cards I haven't revealed."
He was referring to his Mangekyō Sharingan, which he had yet to reveal, and the terrifying abilities it granted him.
"Anyway..." Tsunade paused, seeming to need all her resolve before she continued.
"If things get truly desperate, your first priority is to stay alive! Don't be like those stubborn fools who insist on playing the hero! Nothing matters more than making it back alive.
If you're badly injured or run into trouble you can't handle, find a way to send word to me.
I may not be able to go to the battlefield, but I can still find a way to help from the rear!"
Tsunade didn't spell it out, but her meaning was clear.
For his sake, she was willing to use every resource and ability at her disposal, even from the rear.
The weight of that concern, far beyond ordinary affection between teacher and student, stirred something indescribable in Uchiha Ling.
He looked at Tsunade's beautiful face, so close to his, marked with worry and a hint of shyness. Her eyelashes quivered ever so slightly with nervousness, and a sudden impulse seized him.
Uchiha Ling tightened his hold on Tsunade's wrist and drew her a little closer.
There was barely any distance between them now. They could feel each other's breath.
The unexpected movement made Tsunade's eyes widen. Her heart pounded so wildly it felt as if it might burst from her chest.
"Y-you... what are you doing?" Her voice carried a hint of panic she could barely conceal.
Uchiha Ling gazed deep into her eyes, as if trying to see into her very soul.
His voice was low and carried a captivating quality. "Teacher, I'll remember everything you've told me. In return, I'd like you to promise me one thing."
"W-what?" Tsunade felt as if she were about to be drawn into those deep, dark eyes.
"Until I return," Uchiha Ling said, each word deliberate, "please take good care of yourself and wait for my triumphant return!"
His words carried a student's concern for his teacher, but there was something more—an almost domineering, unquestionable possessiveness and concern.
Before Tsunade could react, Uchiha Ling released her wrist.
But just before he let go, his fingertips seemed to brush, ever so lightly and almost carelessly, across the smooth skin on the back of her hand, sending an even more noticeable shiver through her.
"Teacher, if there's nothing else, I'll go make preparations for the war at the Military Police Force," Uchiha Ling said, inclining his head slightly, his tone calm.
Tsunade was still lost in the flustering atmosphere of the moment. She could almost still feel the touch and warmth of his fingertips on her wrist and the back of her hand.
She looked at Uchiha Ling, who had suddenly returned to being a respectful student, and felt dazed for a moment.
Since when had this kid become so forward?
"Go on." Tsunade tried to steady her uneven breathing and racing heart, then waved him off, doing her best to sound normal.
Uchiha Ling bowed once more and left the grove with steady steps.
Only after his figure had vanished from sight did Tsunade seem to lose her strength. She leaned against the trunk of a nearby tree.
She raised the wrist Uchiha Ling had held and stared at the skin, where the scorching sensation seemed to linger. Her expression was difficult to read.
"That brat!" she muttered, but her face flushed red again despite herself.
The lake that had lain still in her heart for so many years seemed to have had a stone tossed into it, sending out ripples she'd never expected.
Meanwhile, Uchiha Ling walked back toward the Military Police Force, thinking of Tsunade's rare bashfulness and flustered expression. A meaningful smile crept across his lips.
