Background & History

Haku comes from Nadeshiko Village and enters Konoha's Genin Preparatory Class as an exchange student. Her strength immediately separates her from most classmates; after an intense spar with Sakuya, the two are regarded as “monsters” because of their speed, precision, and lethal close-quarters ability. Haku challenges Sakuya to private sparring, and the pair begin training regularly. 12

During the Genin Qualification Exam, Haku displays extremely rapid seal-weaving and advanced use of Clone and Substitution Techniques against Sakuya. She later joins Sakuya and Lian as a three-person team in the Chunin Exams, serving as their high-mobility canopy scout and long-range senbon specialist. The trio secures scrolls through stealth and coordinated ambushes, assists Himawari's team against Amegakure genin, and survives an attack by Root elites at Laozi Rock. 13 18 19 20

Haku, Sakuya, and Lian are promoted to chunin after the exams. Over the next five years, Haku remains in Konoha as Nadeshiko Village's Special Envoy for Friendly Exchange. She and Sakuya become renowned for their missions and develop a wordless mutual understanding built through fighting beside each other. 21 22

Following Nadeshiko custom, Haku confesses her feelings to Sakuya and challenges him to a duel in the Valley of the End. Their battle lasts from dawn until midday and ends in a draw; when Sakuya asks her to remain at his side, she accepts. 22

Haku accompanies Sakuya to Root's Northern Territory stronghold despite his insistence that his vengeance is his alone. During the assault, she supports him with senbon and Nadeshiko Style taijutsu, but Sakuya's Mangekyo awakening and hatred overwhelm him. He knocks her unconscious, leaves her in the collapsing stronghold, and defects from Konoha. 23 24

Although devastated by Sakuya's betrayal, Haku later confronts him with Lian while he steals the Book of Sealing. She nearly exposes his identity by shattering part of his mask with her secret senbon technique. 26

While investigating the berserk Three-Tails with Kakei Sumire's squad, Haku is nearly crushed by Isobu. Sakuya intercepts the attack, then forcibly seals the Three-Tails into Haku and escapes with her through Kamui. He later informs her that she will be used as a jinchūriki until a safe extraction method is available. 30 32

Haku becomes the Scale Branch of the Ten Branches, taking part in jinchūriki retrieval missions despite her objections to Sakuya's methods. She eventually provides Three-Tails chakra for the mini-tailed-beast experiment, after which Isobu is successfully removed from her body. 32 35 36

During the war with the Allied Shinobi Forces, Haku continues fighting for Phantom Branch Village. She is left badly injured and chakra-depleted during the final battle, but survives. After Ren and Lian's sacrifices devastate Sakuya, Haku comforts him rather than abandoning him. 46 48

Despite her loyalty, Haku does not blindly accept Sakuya's descent into vengeance. She challenges his decisions, urges him to seek the truth through Konoha rather than violence, and struggles with being made a jinchūriki and a weapon for the Ten Branches. 24 32

Her compassion extends to the rescued orphans within the organization. Though initially conflicted about remaining with Sakuya, she gradually finds purpose in protecting the children and helping maintain their new home. 32
