Background / History

Tang San becomes Yu Xiaogang's disciple after Yu identifies his Twin Martial Souls. He trusts that someone able to recognize both martial souls immediately must be qualified to guide him, and accepts Yu's promise to train him into the continent's foremost genius 4.

At Notting Academy, he fiercely defends Yu Xiaogang when other students insult him. He later builds a reputation among the work-study students by standing up for them; opponents are wary of his poisonous Blue Silver Grass 5 10.

Yu directs Tang San toward a poison-based development path for Blue Silver Grass while reserving the Clear Sky Hammer as a complementary martial soul. Tang San embraces this plan, even after initially being unsettled by Yu's Luo Sanpao soul skill 6.

Appearance

Tang San has black hair and wheat-colored skin early in the story. Following the absorption of his third Soul Ring, his body becomes pitch-black; the condition persists as his meridians harden and become blocked 4 43 52.

  • Black hair 4
  • Wheat-colored skin before his poison-related condition 4
  • Pitch-black complexion after absorbing the Green Poison Bone-Eroding Serpent ring 43 54
  • Often wears a tacky dark-blue outfit while at Shrek Academy 56

Personality

Tang San is deeply loyal to Yu Xiaogang, repeatedly placing faith in his teacher's theories even when circumstances cause him doubt. He is obedient and respectful in Yu's presence, follows half a step behind him, and turns to him in fear when his body begins failing 4 54 56.

He is determined, competitive, and highly sensitive to humiliation. Although he promises not to challenge Xia Yan, he privately resolves to cultivate harder, forge hidden weapons, and eventually defeat him. Public mockery after his arena victories leaves him angry and gloomy 10 35.

Tang San can also disregard others' boundaries. When introducing Yu Xiaogang to his Shrek classmates, he begins revealing their ages, levels, martial souls, and soul skills without permission 56.

Abilities & Skills

Blue Silver Grass

Tang San's primary martial soul is Blue Silver Grass, which he develops through binding, area control, and lethal poison.

  • Uses the grass to restrain opponents with Bind 7.
  • His poisonous vines make him a feared protector among the work-study students 10.
  • Can use Blue Silver Grass and venom strategically against stronger physical opponents in the Great Soul Arena 34.
  • The martial soul's low load-bearing capacity leaves excess poison-attribute energy in his body, contributing to his blackened appearance and meridian damage 54.

Corrosive Juice Secretion

His second soul skill causes dark-purple Blue Silver Grass to exude a thin, sticky white poisonous fluid over a wide area.

  • Covers vegetation and surfaces within a twenty-meter radius 18.
  • The poison does not harm Tang San because it originates from his own martial soul and soul rings 28.
  • Its humiliating appearance makes opponents reluctant to fight him even if they believe they could overpower his Blue Silver Grass 35.
  • The second Soul Ring is later lost 55.

Poison-Attribute Blue Silver Grass

After obtaining his third ring from the Green Poison Bone-Eroding Serpent, Tang San's Blue Silver Grass becomes more dangerous and visibly altered.

  • The serpent's venom can corrode bone until it becomes brittle and breaks 42.
  • Tang San manifests Dark Purple Blue Silver Grass during his Shrek examination battle 28.
  • The ring's excessive poison-attribute energy is linked to his blackened body and hardened meridians 54.

Tang Sect Techniques and Hidden Weapons

Tang San practices several techniques and forges hidden weapons to compensate for Blue Silver Grass's perceived limitations.

  • Mysterious Heaven Skill — cultivates for years using this method, but its practice coincides with his meridians losing elasticity and hardening 10 52.
  • Purple Demon Eye — used to closely observe Luo Sanpao 6.
  • Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track — listed among the techniques Tang San relies on against Xia Yan 10.
  • Mysterious Jade Hand — listed among his Tang Sect techniques 10.
  • Sand-Shooting Shadow — a hidden weapon Tang San considers using against Meng Yiran in anger 42.
  • Trains at a blacksmith shop and forges hidden weapons from scrap metal 10.

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang San's second martial soul is the Clear Sky Hammer.

  • Its existence, alongside Blue Silver Grass, makes him a Twin Martial Soul possessor 4.
  • Yu Xiaogang regards the hammer as part of a powerful combination with poison-oriented Blue Silver Grass 6.
  • Tang Hao believes Tang San could recover his prospects by awakening the Blue Silver Emperor bloodline and combining it with the Clear Sky Hammer, Mysterious Heaven Skill, and hidden weapons 64.

Relationships

  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and master. Tang San is fiercely protective of Yu's reputation and relies heavily on his guidance, particularly after his meridian condition emerges 5 54 55.
  • Tang Hao — Father. Tang Hao is proud and protective of Tang San, later acting to secure a possible treatment for him 7 65.
  • Xia Yan — Rival and former Notting Academy classmate. Tang San is driven to surpass him despite promising Yu Xiaogang that he would not challenge him 10 19.
  • Xiao Wu — Fellow student and traveling companion to Shrek Academy. Tang San attempts to help and protect her, but she remains distant and refuses his assistance 24 25 34.
  • Oscar — Shrek classmate. Tang San fights Meng Yiran to secure Oscar's opportunity to absorb the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent ring; Oscar later provides Tang San a room after his examination battle 42 29.
  • Zhao Wuji — Shrek instructor. Zhao Wuji supports Tang San during the dispute over Oscar's Soul Ring and becomes concerned after Tang San's third-ring changes 42 43.
  • Meng Yiran — Opponent defeated by Tang San while competing for the Phoenix-tail Crested Serpent 42.

Shrek Academy Enrollment and Examination

Tang San travels with Xiao Wu to Shrek Academy, where his Blue Silver Grass is ridiculed during enrollment. He nevertheless takes a leadership role in planning the group’s defense against Zhao Wuji and uses Blue Silver Grass and hidden weapons in the examination 24 26 27.

Great Soul Arena

Tang San enters one-on-one arena fights and defeats opponents through binding, poison, and sticky sap. His victories provoke audience laughter rather than admiration, intensifying his resentment and resolve to improve 34 35.

Third Soul Ring and Meridian Crisis

Tang San reaches level 30, absorbs the Green Poison Bone-Eroding Serpent ring, and undergoes a drastic physical change. Trivia

  • Tang San reaches level 30 immediately after helping Oscar obtain his third Soul Ring, delaying the group’s return from the Star Dou Great Forest 42.
  • His arena opponents fear the embarrassment of being coated in his sticky poison more than they fear his direct combat ability 35.
  • Yu Xiaogang's intended solution to Tang San's condition is for him to absorb a thousand-year Blue Silver Grass as his fourth Soul Ring, increasing his martial soul's capacity 54.
