The men who came to present Zhang Tie with the terms agreed upon by the great families of the Ewindara Archipelago were themselves renowned figures throughout the archipelago. One was Connor, patriarch of the Renard Family on Akray Island; the other was Blaiman, patriarch of the Willis Family on Gantiadu Island.
Both men were over sixty. In this age, that was the golden prime of life for many men.
Had Zhang Tie not appeared, both Connor and Blaiman would have been leading candidates for chairman of the Ewindara Council, which was still being formed. Connor, patriarch of the Renard Family, was in fact the most important force behind the Ewindara Council.
Upon seeing Connor, Zhang Tie gave the man a careful once-over—grayish-brown hair, a high hooked nose, deeply sunken eye sockets, and a powerful jaw. One look told him that this was no simple man.
Compared to Connor, Blaiman, patriarch of the Willis Family on Gantiadu Island, looked like a pampered engineer—wearing glasses, refined and scholarly, almost harmless.
