Background / History

During the Third Shinobi World War, Fugaku was a prominent Konoha combatant and high-level commander known as the “Wicked Eye.” He personally mentored Uchiha Ming for roughly a year, judged Ming’s abilities to be close to his own, and entrusted him with the dangerous mission of investigating Kakashi and Rin’s disappearance. Before sending him out, Fugaku provided the forbidden Uchiha technique Izanagi, stating that he had nothing further to teach him in ninjutsu. 1

After Ming returned with suspected Hashirama Senju Cells, Fugaku recognized their immense vitality and initially urged caution. He understood both the potential of Wood Release and the history of failed Konoha transplantation experiments, but eventually concluded that the Uchiha needed greater power to contend with Konoha’s other factions. 2

Fugaku led the clan’s political backing of Minato Namikaze for Fourth Hokage, viewing Minato as a mutually beneficial ally whose weaker political foundation made Uchiha support especially valuable. He also accepted four captured Mist ninja blades as political assets that could strengthen the clan’s position. 10

Following evidence that Danzō and Orochimaru were conducting forbidden experiments—including Sharingan transplantation—Fugaku approved a covert Uchiha research program. The clan acquired Shentian Bio, established a research institute under the cover of cloning research, and concealed its Hashirama Cell work from most of the clan. 24 25 26

After Minato’s death and Hiruzen’s return to the Hokage position, Fugaku rejected radical proposals from his clansmen. Rather than launch an open rebellion, he planned to use Danzō and Orochimaru’s crimes to undermine Hiruzen and eventually create a path for Akira to become Hokage. 75 76

Appearance

Fugaku is depicted as a stern Uchiha shinobi who wore a jōnin vest while serving on the war front. 1

  • Scarlet Sharingan eyes; repeated Mangekyō use later leaves him bleeding from the eyes and suffering blurred vision. 58 68
  • His Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan has a jagged, gear-like seven-pointed shuriken pattern. 192

Personality

Fugaku is pragmatic, disciplined, and intensely focused on the Uchiha Clan’s survival. He takes pride in the clan’s Sharingan heritage, but is willing to compromise its traditional ideals by pursuing Hashirama Cell research when he believes the political and military situation demands it. 1 25 86

As a leader, he favors preparation and leverage over reckless action. He restrains clan extremists after Hiruzen’s reinstatement, refuses to casually assassinate Danzō, and waits to expose forbidden experiments until doing so can decisively shift Konoha’s political balance. 75 87

He is also protective of younger Uchiha. He mentors Akira, worries over Shisui’s survival and secrecy, and plans Itachi’s education around a future role in Konoha’s leadership—though he admits that he is not naturally skilled at communicating with his son. 1 83 87

Abilities & Skills

Mangekyō Sharingan

Fugaku possesses Mangekyō Sharingan ocular power and considers the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan the true peak of the Uchiha Clan. 9

  • Can use Mangekyō genjutsu to briefly restrain the Nine-Tails. 60
  • Can manifest and evolve Susanoo in large-scale combat. 57
  • Repeated use severely drains his ocular power, causes pain and blurred vision, and risks blindness without restoration. 67 68 86

Susanoo

Fugaku’s Susanoo can confront Tailed Beasts and later develops into a Six Paths-enhanced Complete Body form. 57 249

  • Its third stage was able to contend with the Nine-Tails’ raw power. 57
  • Fought alongside Shisui’s Susanoo against Uchiha Madara’s Complete Body Susanoo. 249
  • Its blue flames can carry an unusually powerful Amaterasu that nearly burns through Madara’s Susanoo. 250

Amaterasu

Fugaku can produce black flames through his Sharingan. 229 250

  • Destroyed Nagato’s Attraction core during the battle against him. 229
  • Covered Madara’s Susanoo in flames powerful enough that Madara considered them far beyond ordinary Amaterasu. 250

Sage Mode

After receiving Akira’s instruction and Senjutsu Chakra, Fugaku successfully learns Sage Mode. 185 186

  • Grants him stable Senjutsu Chakra after he overcomes initial physical distortions caused by uncontrolled natural energy. 186
  • Can be incorporated into the exceptional Susanoo used against Madara. 249

Tactical Leadership

Fugaku is an experienced commander and political strategist.

  • Assigned high-risk reconnaissance and battlefield missions based on his assessment of individual Uchiha strength. 1 32
  • Planned the clan’s backing of Minato, then later Akira’s path toward the Hokage position. 10 75 76

  • Uchiha Itachi — eldest son. Fugaku intends to cultivate him as a future Hokage candidate and later promises to teach him advanced ninjutsu. 53 193
  • Uchiha Sasuke — younger son. Fugaku agrees to let him become the jinchūriki of a Nine-Tails fragment as a strategic safeguard for the clan. 67
  • Uchiha Shisui — powerful clansman and close battlefield ally. Fugaku approves the Hashirama Cell transplant to save him, trains in Sage Mode alongside him, and orders him to protect the secret of Kotoamatsukami. 83 150 186
  • Minato Namikaze — political ally backed by the Uchiha Clan for Fourth Hokage. Fugaku sees Minato as the clan’s best route into Konoha’s power structure. 10
  • Shimura Danzō — political enemy. Fugaku holds Danzō responsible for missing Uchiha clansmen and forcibly removes Danzō’s transplanted Sharingan after his arrest. 24 117
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — mistrusted Hokage whose connection to Danzō’s actions drives Fugaku’s long-term political strategy. 24 75 87
  • Uchiha Hikari — hostile Uchiha ancestor created as an artificial weapon by the clan’s predecessors. Fugaku and Shisui battle her together, while Fugaku acknowledges the clan’s historical responsibility for her existence. 151 155

Trivia
