Background

Yahiko's sacrifice was the turning point in Nagato's life. As Hanzo's forces attacked, Nagato instinctively awakened the Rinnegan's power, annihilated the surrounding Amegakure ninja with the Demonic Statue's Chakra Dragon, and survived alongside Konan. The experience convinced him that Yahiko's ideal of peace through mutual understanding was naïve without overwhelming power. 29

Forcing the Demonic Statue into service severely drained his life force, leaving him emaciated and unable to use his legs. Obito, posing as Madara, exploited this weakness by teaching him the Six Paths Technique and later offering Hashirama Cells as a cure. The transplant restored Nagato completely, gave him Wood Release, and made him more willing to pursue Obito's agenda. 29 52

Despite his increasingly ruthless methods, Nagato continued to regard Yahiko as Akatsuki's true leader. He and Konan intended to seize the Land of Rain from Hanzo and improve the lives of its long-suffering population. 74

Appearance

Nagato's appearance changed dramatically as his power increased. Before his recovery, he was gaunt and withered, with black receivers embedded in his back; the Demonic Statue's drain had left him crippled. 34 52

  • Red hair, which rises and flutters when he releases large amounts of chakra. 144
  • Purple Rinnegan in both eyes. 29
  • In Sage Mode, he develops two horns, eye markings, and fine scales across his skin. 165
  • As a Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, his hair turns white and six Truth-Seeking Orbs float behind him. 231
  • After absorbing the God Tree, he wears a white trench coat and manifests a six-tomoe Rinne Sharingan in his forehead. 242

Personality

Nagato is driven by the belief that peace requires the world to understand pain. Yahiko's death transformed his idealism into a conviction that only force, fear, and the gathering of the Tailed Beasts could end the cycle of conflict. 29 34

He is confident to the point of arrogance, repeatedly declaring himself a god or the successor to the Sage of Six Paths. Early on, this confidence caused him to underestimate Uchiha Ming and Uchiha Akira; later, he acknowledged that the Six Paths Technique lacked a decisive answer to opponents of comparable strength. 34 36 159 169

Nagato is also cautious when circumstances demand it. He refused to force an assault on Konoha when he judged Akatsuki unprepared, and he anticipated Black Zetsu's betrayal rather than fully trusting a stranger who had appeared in his life. 218 227

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan

Nagato possesses the Rinnegan, which grants access to the Six Paths Technique and authority over the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. His chakra reserves, reinforced by his Uzumaki heritage and Hashirama Cells, allow him to channel the eyes' powers on a massive scale. 54 146

  • Shinra Tensei — Releases invisible Repulsion force; at Six Paths level, its force becomes visible and can destroy a Complete Body Susanoo. 35 226
  • Banshō Ten'in — Pulls targets toward him with Attraction. 145 227
  • Chibaku Tensei — Creates Attraction cores that draw terrain into enormous sealing spheres; he used one to imprison Black Zetsu and launch him into outer space. 144 227
  • Preta Path — Absorbs ninjutsu, including Sarutobi Hiruzen's Earth and Fire Releases; it can also extract and transfer souls. 56 187
  • Naraka Path — Can restore destroyed Paths of Pain and counters the Spirit Transformation Technique. 35 77
  • Animal Path — Summons creatures including the Yatagarasu, chameleon, Hellhound, crab, and other giant beasts. 35 62
  • Human Path — Used to gather intelligence directly from captured enemies. 34
  • Limitations — The Preta Path cannot move while absorbing and has a limit to its absorption; Nagato judged several paths ineffective against elite opponents. 159 169

Six Paths of Pain

Nagato remotely controls corpses through black receivers and shared vision, dividing the Rinnegan's powers across multiple bodies. 35 36

  • The Deva Path was originally made from Yahiko's body and reinforced with Yin-Yang Release. 36
  • After Yahiko's body could no longer bear Nagato's growing chakra and ocular power, Nagato killed Hanzo and converted his body into a stronger Deva Path. 76 137
  • The Paths can be dismissed to preserve them when Nagato is severely weakened. 63

Wood Release

Hashirama Cells restored Nagato's body and gave him Wood Release, which gradually became the foundation of his combat style against high-level opponents. 52 169

  • Defensive techniques — Creates Wood Shields and the Wood Golem Shield, the latter surviving attacks from Complete Body Susanoo with only minor cracking. 56 144
  • Battlefield control — Uses Deep Forest Bloom, Great Forest Wall, Wood Five Hands, and binding roots to restrict enemies and Tailed Beasts. 142 145
  • Wood Golem and Wood Dragon — Summons Hashirama-style constructs for close combat and Tailed Beast restraint. 144 195
  • Wood Human Technique — Used to manipulate spatial damage from Kamui Shuriken and wound Matatabi. 144
  • True Several Thousand Hands — In Sage Mode and with Ten-Tails chakra, creates a Thousand-Armed Kannon over a thousand meters tall. 230 231

Sage Mode

Nagato learned Ryūchi Cave Sage Mode from the White Snake Sage. Senjutsu chakra greatly improves the quality and scale of his techniques, and he combined it with Wood Release to gain regeneration surpassing ordinary Hashirama-style Wood Release. 165 196

  • Sage Art: Wood Release — Produces enhanced Wood Golems, Wood Dragons, and True Several Thousand Hands. 195 230
  • Inorganic Reincarnation Technique — Gives life to his wooden constructs. 195
  • Limitation — His Sage Mode initially caused pronounced snake-like transformations. 165

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki Powers

After gathering the Tailed Beasts' chakra, Nagato became the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki and gained Six Paths power. His Ten-Tails was incomplete because Hikari possessed a portion of its chakra and the Nine-Tails was substituted with Kinkaku and Ginkaku's chakra. 226 243

  • Truth-Seeking Orbs — Initially manifested six, later nine after absorbing the God Tree; they can transform into weapons, shields, and black receivers. 228 242 245
  • Six Paths Staff — Used in close combat and to channel his Six Paths power. 229 232
  • Six Paths: Shinra Tensei — A charged Repulsion powerful enough to shatter Hikari's Complete Body Susanoo. 226
  • Extreme regeneration — Could recover from being severed in half, though Akira's Truth-Seeking Orb black receivers interfered with this regeneration. 233
  • God Tree form — Absorbing the God Tree gave him a six-tomoe Rinne Sharingan and enough strength to contend with Jigen. 242 251

Equipment / Controlled Entities

  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — A husk of the Ten-Tails controlled through the Rinnegan; used to extract, seal, and revive Tailed Beast chakra. 29 144 146
  • Black Receivers — Chakra conductors used to control the Paths of Pain and later formed from Truth-Seeking Orbs. 34 227
  • Six Paths Staff — Staff wielded after becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki. 229 232

Relationships

  • Yahiko — Closest friend and Akatsuki's true leader in Nagato's eyes; Yahiko's sacrifice reshaped Nagato's ideology, and Nagato later used his body as the first Deva Path. 29 74 76
  • Konan — His most trusted companion and adviser; she cared for him while he was crippled and repeatedly warned him against Obito, Zetsu, and Hikari. 34 52 187
  • Jiraiya — Nagato's former teacher; Jiraiya regarded him as a former student and feared the threat he had become. 44
  • Uchiha Obito / “Madara” — Benefactor and manipulator who taught him the Six Paths Technique and transplanted Hashirama Cells into him. Nagato initially trusted him and sought to avenge his apparent death. 34 52 77
  • Black Zetsu — Adviser who guided him toward the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki plan; Nagato eventually discovered Zetsu's betrayal attempt and sealed him away. 77 169 226 227
  • Uchiha Hikari — Akatsuki ally and rival. She criticized the limitations of his Rinnegan, fought him over the Ten-Tails, and retained a portion of its chakra. 159 224 226
  • Orochimaru — Akatsuki member tasked with refining Impure World Reincarnation to counter Akira's space-time ninjutsu. 187
  • Uchiha Akira — Major opponent whose Kamui repeatedly disrupted Nagato's plans; Akira ultimately defeated him in direct combat. 140 144 233
  • Hanzo — Former enemy responsible for Yahiko's death and Nagato's crippling injuries; Nagato killed him and made his corpse the new Deva Path. 29 76

Story Role / Major Arcs

Akatsuki's Rebirth

After Yahiko's death, Nagato annihilated Hanzo's surrounding forces with the Demonic Statue and accepted Obito's offer of power. He abandoned peaceful persuasion in favor of forcing the world to understand pain. 29 34

Six Paths of Pain Operations

Nagato tested the incomplete Six Paths of Pain against Uchiha Ming's reconnaissance team. Ming destroyed the Naraka Path and exposed the danger of Nagato's overconfidence, but Nagato continued to develop the Paths and use them as Akatsuki's primary force. 35 36

Nine-Tails Incident and Recovery

Nagato entered Konoha during the Nine-Tails crisis, revealed Wood Release after his Hashirama Cell transplant, and survived Might Duy's Gate of Death Strike. He withdrew with the Six Paths of Pain after sustaining severe injuries. 52 56 62 63

Conquest of Amegakure

Nagato killed Hanzo, replaced Yahiko's Deva Path with Hanzo's superior body, and moved to take control of the Land of Rain. Under Akatsuki, Amegakure grew into a military power second only to the Land of Fire. 76 137 169

Tailed Beast Campaign

Nagato organized Akatsuki's alliance with Kumogakure and Iwagakure against Konoha, personally confronted the Raikage and Tsuchikage, and began collecting Tailed Beasts. He captured or obtained chakra from Matatabi, the Three-Tails, the One-Tail, and the Seven-Tails while repeatedly clashing with Uchiha Akira. 127 129 144 196 217

Ten-Tails Jinchūriki

After accumulating sufficient chakra, Nagato became the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki and fought Hikari for control of the beast's power. He defeated her with Six Paths: Shinra Tensei and Chibaku Tensei, then rejected Black Zetsu's proposal to use Infinite Tsukuyomi to restore the incomplete Ten-Tails. 224 226

Betrayal, Final Battles, and Death

Nagato anticipated Black Zetsu's possession attempt, sealed him in a Chibaku Tensei sphere, and went alone to confront Konoha. He overwhelmed Tsunade, Fugaku, and Shisui before Uchiha Akira defeated him with the Tenseigan's Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion and Truth-Seeking Orb black receivers. 227 230 233

He later absorbed the God Tree and resumed fighting Jigen, but Black Zetsu ultimately stole his Rinnegan after the Ten-Tails was extracted. The theft enabled Madara's revival and killed Nagato. 242 254

Trivia

  • Nagato initially believed the Rinnegan's Six Paths powers made him a god, but later concluded that Wood Release was more reliable against elite opponents. 34 159 169
  • He was unable to detect the Spirit Transformation Technique after Black Zetsu taught him methods to conceal his chakra and counter it. 77 86
  • The White Snake Sage recognized that Nagato's Rinnegan did not originally belong to him, but deliberately withheld that knowledge. 165
