Background / History

Tsunade had become disillusioned with Konoha following the loss of her younger brother and other personal experiences. Although Naruto appealed to the village’s legacy and warned that internal conflict could destroy it, she initially refused to return and assume the Hokage position. Her great-uncle’s influence also left her distrustful of the Uchiha clan. 21

Naruto and Jiraiya located her in the Land of Hot Water after the Third Hokage’s death. To judge Naruto’s resolve, Tsunade challenged him to defeat her before she would protect the Hokage position for him. She faced his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode with the Strength of a Hundred technique, then witnessed his controlled Nine-Tails transformation. 21 22

Impressed by Naruto’s power, she acknowledged him, accepted him as her apprentice, gave him her necklace, and agreed to return to Konoha. She was subsequently installed as the Fifth Hokage. 22 25

Hokage Tenure

Tsunade returned to a public welcome and immediately addressed Konoha’s Uchiha crisis with the elders, Jiraiya, and Danzo.
