The low-ranking mages who had originally gathered at the entrance had long since dispersed, resting and waiting for the second day of the conference.

The three returned to the Silver-Inlaid Rose's dining hall. Rainer had intended to treat them, but since they were all staying at the inn, Fleming ultimately suggested that they simply have something casual.

Drawing upon the spirit of someone from a nation of food lovers, Rainer ordered a serving of cumin-grilled lamb chops, half a smoked chicken, a caviar salad, and a vegetable crucian carp soup, while Fleming and Garon each ordered some simple meat dishes.

"Hehe, I really envy you. You can still appreciate the taste of food."

Fleming spoke as though reminiscing.

"You know, low-ranking mages live more than thirty years longer than ordinary people, while mid-ranking mages gain over a hundred additional years. Such long lives make all food lose its flavor to us. It has been fifty years since I last enjoyed the pleasure food brings."

Fleming took a sip of red wine from his glass, looking rather helpless.

"And that is precisely why you can devote all your attention to magical research."

Rainer offered a bit of professional flattery. From their earlier conversation, he had learned that Fleming Ernst was a highly respected mage on Mercury Plain, chiefly responsible for reviewing papers. With the intention of making friends, Rainer naturally valued Fleming greatly.

"Unfortunately, I still have not broken free from the old shackles."

With a quiet sigh, Fleming said, "In fact, there are quite a few people in the magical world who cling to convention. The Francois family is one such group."
