The other party merely smiled and countered with a question.
"What about Fleglova?"
Franz frowned, his tone helpless.
"She robbed the treasury she was guarding."
Ajani's expression did not change.
"Then haven't I walked right into the trap?"
Ajani was testing him. After all, Fleglova had been trained by her own hand; now that something had gone wrong, she could hardly escape blame. Moreover, her own identity and position were exceedingly sensitive.
But Franz did not believe Fleglova's affair had anything to do with Ajani. After all, she had been gone for years.
Besides, Fleglova had been working with Kurt, the former chief of police of the Austrian Empire. Without Fleglova, the mole, covering for him, Kurt could never have acted so brazenly.
Yet Franz did not answer Ajani's question. Instead, he said, "Someone like you must have some other purpose if you've come to walk into the trap."
Ajani gave him a seductive smile.
"A man who's too clever can be frightening."
"Are you afraid of me, then?"
Franz deliberately pulled her closer to him.
Ajani merely rolled her eyes at Franz and gave a cold snort.
"Barbaric."
That assessment left Franz somewhat embarrassed. Recalling certain things from the past only made him feel even more awkward.
So he decided to change the subject. Even with the music to cover them, this moment would not last long.
"What is your purpose?"
"I'm bankrupt."
Ajani answered crisply, even with a trace of righteous confidence.
"I told you not to invest!"
Franz could not hold himself back either. One million dollars would have been more than enough for her even if she spent every day drowning in wine and women, so long as she did not invest it.
Avoiding Franz's gaze, Ajani said softly, "Isn't it because you suddenly started a
