Background

Mu En is Shrek Academy's foremost pillar and the master of the Sea God Pavilion. Despite being a level 99 Limit Douluo, he spent his days posing as the relaxed gatekeeper outside the Freshman Dormitory Building, usually resting in a rattan rocking chair. His presence remained so restrained that even Niu Tian initially perceived him as merely an unfathomable old man. 47 66

His age and declining lifespan left him frail for much of the story. He nevertheless continued to protect Shrek, intervening personally when Xuan Zi's negligence endangered students and later shielding Shrek City from the Star Dou Great Forest's fierce beasts. 23 81

After observing Huo Yuhao and Wang Dong's performance in the Soul Fighting Zone, Mu En recognized that Huo Yuhao had surpassed the Outer Academy's capacity for instruction. He accepted Huo Yuhao as his closed-door disciple, admitted him directly to the Inner Academy on Sea God Island, and later also accepted Wang Dong as a “locking disciple.” 67 68

Huo Yuhao later sent him the Spirit-Devouring Fierce Blade, allowing Mu En to purify its backlash into Gold of Life with the Golden Ancient Tree's support. The restored life energy removed his previous frailty and extended his ability to guard Shrek for at least another decade. 142 143

As Shrek's leader, he is measured rather than reckless. He accepts compromises with Di Tian to avert war, yet refuses to surrender Huo Yuhao when the Beast God demands him. 82 84 His compassion can also make him reluctant to impose irreversible punishment on subordinates such as Xuan Zi, even when their failures are severe. 69

Mu En values talent, character, and self-control.
