Background

Huang Chao was born displaying adult-like speech, knowledge, and appetite. The divine Tiger Soul Blade descended at his birth, and the Daoist Li Zixu recognized him as the reincarnation of the Demon Orb. Zixu remained beside him as a protector of the Dao rather than a conventional master, believing no one in the world qualified to teach him as such. 541 542

During his first eight years, Zixu instructed Huang Chao in martial and Daoist arts while rumors of the child’s supernatural birth and strength were deliberately spread throughout the realm. By age eight, Huang Chao stood roughly 230 centimeters tall and had become an imposing, muscular fighter. 542

Huang Chao’s parents died shortly afterward, and Zixu disappeared after leaving behind numerous treasures. Huang Chao sold the Huang family’s assets, purchased a post in the Tang Demon Slaying Bureau, and began building his reputation through demon hunting. 542

After joining the Tang Demon Slaying Bureau, Huang Chao killed a family of flood dragons, distributed most of their wealth to local victims, and was promoted to Caozhou’s Demon-Slaying Envoy. He then purged demons across the province, building a reputation as both a demon slayer and a source of sudden wealth. 543

Caozhou Drought and Rebellion

When Caozhou suffered drought and abandonment by Tang officials, Huang Chao spent his accumulated wealth on relief and gained the allegiance of tens of thousands of rebels. After the court condemned him to death for privately buying grain, he killed the envoys and openly rebelled against the Tang Dynasty. 544 547

Fall of Tang and Founding of Jing

Huang Chao’s Ghostface Army rapidly reached Chang’an, annihilated Tantai Yu’s army, killed Emperor Li Ang, and massacred the Tang court’s remaining officials and nobles. He subsequently destroyed the Five Clans and Seven Houses, defeated anti-rebel coalitions, and conquered the realm. 550 551 552 555
