Background / History

Founding and early standing

Konoha was founded jointly by Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara. Its early Hokage shaped its reputation as the leading ninja village: Hashirama established it, Tobirama consolidated it through political reforms and forbidden techniques, and Hiruzen Sarutobi was celebrated as the “Ninja Hero.” 54 57

Minato Namikaze succeeded Hiruzen as the Fourth Hokage after distinguishing himself in the Third Shinobi World War. His Flying Thunder God Technique and “Yellow Flash” reputation made him a major deterrent to rival villages. 13 57

Third Shinobi World War

In Konoha’s 47th year, Orochimaru defected and became its first S-rank missing-nin. One month later, Sunagakure, Iwagakure, Kumogakure, and Kirigakure launched attacks on Konoha’s borders, beginning the Third Shinobi World War. 13

The conflict lasted two years. Sunagakure, Iwagakure, and Kirigakure eventually reconciled with Konoha, while Kumogakure remained hostile. 13

Decline beneath its prosperity

Despite its bustling commercial district, peaceful civilian life, and continued claim to the title of strongest village, Konoha had begun losing key figures. The deaths of the White Fang and other high-level shinobi, Orochimaru’s defection, and the departures of Jiraiya and Tsunade weakened its former dominance. 54 58

The village’s deterioration became more apparent after the Nine-Tails broke free during Kushina Uzumaki’s childbirth. Konoha sustained extensive genin, chūnin, and jōnin casualties, while Minato died resealing the beast. 106 119

Internal crises

Konoha hosted a jōnin examination to display its younger generation and restore its damaged prestige after war and Minato’s death. 174 180

During that examination, Kumogakure was accused of kidnapping Hyuga Hinata. The dispute escalated until Hizashi Hyuga sacrificed himself in place of his brother Hiashi to prevent renewed war. 196

The Uchiha Clan, once central to Konoha’s power, was gradually marginalized despite retaining the nominal title of Konoha Police Force. Their resulting coup preparations deepened the divide between Uchiha Fugaku’s faction and Hiruzen’s administration. 196

Konoha’s leadership later agreed to assist Itachi in exterminating the Uchiha Clan in exchange for the clan’s Sharingan eyes; Danzo demanded possession of every eye afterward. 200

Major Incidents

Nine-Tails Incident

The Nine-Tails escaped Kushina’s seal and devastated Konoha. Minato transferred away a Tailed Beast Bomb to save the village, then later died while resealing the beast. 106 119

The disaster inflicted heavy casualties across Konoha’s shinobi ranks and left the village severely weakened for years. 119 120

Jōnin Examination

Hiruzen organized an unprecedented jōnin examination that drew competitors from multiple villages. Its format included elimination matches and a month-long survival contest in the Forest of Death involving Heaven and Earth Scrolls. 180

The event was intended to demonstrate Konoha’s remaining strength and restore its standing among the villages, but rival villages sent their own promising talents rather than accepting Konoha’s dominance. 179

Konoha Crush Plan

Orochimaru developed the Konoha Crush Plan to kill Hiruzen and erase Konoha. Jun Tianlin criticized the plan’s initial weaknesses, particularly Otogakure’s lack of chūnin and jōnin compared with Konoha, prompting Orochimaru to revise it. 210

During the Chūnin Exams, Otogakure agents already embedded throughout Konoha attacked from within while Kirigakure forces invaded from outside under Ao’s command. Kabuto Yakushi cast a large-scale Temple of Nirvana Technique over Training Ground Three. 277 278

Orochimaru trapped Hiruzen in the Four Violet Flames Formation and used an improved Impure World Reincarnation Jutsu to deploy the bodies of Hashirama, Tobirama, and Minato against him. Hiruzen was ultimately overwhelmed and killed. 278 280 283

Jun Tianlin blinded Kakashi Hatake and stole his Sharingan, summoned a giant three-headed serpent to cause further destruction, eliminated Danzō, and collapsed Root’s underground headquarters. 278 279 284 286

Destruction and Aftermath

Konoha’s defending shinobi forces were annihilated by the combined Otogakure and Kirigakure assault. Most civilians either died or fled, while fewer than one in ten Konoha ninja survived overall; those who did were largely away on missions or escaped during the attack. 286 287

After the battle, Orochimaru and Terumi Mei relocated the personnel, civilians, resources, equipment, and records of Otogakure and Kirigakure to Konoha’s territory. 286 287

The merged settlement was named Divine Martial Village (Shenwu). Although it occupied Konoha’s former land, it was established as a new village rather than a restoration of Konoha. 287
