Why was Kakashi known as the Hatake Five-Five Split?
Why could he go a few rounds with anyone and always end up evenly matched, from the beginning of the Naruto story to the end, whether he was facing a boss or some passerby?
The reason was that he knew so many Ninjutsu that he could devise different strategies to deal with his enemies.
He hadn't earned the title of Copy Ninja for nothing!
And as someone who'd crossed over, Gong Yi knew all too well how important it was to have hidden trump cards!
If he didn't have a couple of trump cards and a few powerful moves, how could he deal with the endless stream of enemies waiting for him in the future?
Recovery Technique effectively restored physical fatigue and injuries, mental exhaustion, and depleted Chakra.
He made use of the first effect for physical and Taijutsu training.
Restoring his mental energy allowed him to throw himself into training feeling refreshed.
But Gong Yi hadn't yet found an effective way to make use of the Chakra-restoring effect.
The reason was simple: aside from the Three Body Technique, he didn't have many Ninjutsu to train with, so he wasn't using as much Chakra as he'd imagined.
Gong Yi flipped over and climbed to his feet. "Tomorrow, it's time to go see Teacher Ishii!"
Ishii Kawa was an outstanding Konoha Chunin. After carrying out several missions, the Third Hokage had transferred him to the Ninja Academy to teach during peacetime.
Looking at the earnest student in front of him, Ishii Kawa couldn't help sighing.
"Gong Yi, I know you're very hardworking, but Ninjutsu isn't something someone your age can learn yet."
Perhaps afraid of discouraging his student, Ishii Kawa explained.
"You're too young, and your body hasn't fully developed. You don't have enough physical or mental energy, so your Chakra reserves are too low. They're not enough to support even a C-rank Ninjutsu."
Gong Yi didn't argue. He simply listened quietly.
He knew very well that everything Ishii Kawa had said was true.
But that was only true of ordinary people.
Gong Yi's eyes shone brightly. "Teacher Ishii, you know I'm just a war orphan, a civilian ninja. Once I finish at the Ninja Academy, I'll be sent out on missions to support myself. I need some Ninjutsu to keep me safe."
Ishii Kawa furrowed his brow. Of course he knew.
In fact, he was a civilian ninja himself, so he understood just how precious Ninjutsu was.
As a rule, the Ninjutsu of the major ninja villages was kept secret. Even low-level techniques weren't taught to just anyone.
Usually, Ninjutsu was passed down through ninja clans or from master to student.
The other way was to complete missions and receive Ninjutsu as a reward from the village.
Gong Yi was the most outstanding civilian ninja in his year at the Konoha Ninja Academy, and he and Ishii Kawa had a very good relationship.
Gong Yi often came to him for advice about ninja skills.
In a sense, Ishii Kawa and Gong Yi had no formal master-student relationship, but they had long since become master and student in practice.
Their relationship was no longer simply that of a teacher and student at school.
That was probably what gave Gong Yi the confidence to come to him today. He trusted Ishii Kawa!
Not wanting to discourage Gong Yi, Ishii Kawa thought for a moment, then said, "If you can get to the point where you can perform the Three Body Technique with ease, I'll teach you a C-rank Ninjutsu!"
"Don't underestimate C-rank Ninjutsu. The ranks are based on destructive power and damage; they don't mean an A-rank technique is necessarily better than a D-rank one. It depends on the circumstances and timing."
Gong Yi understood that, of course. Uchiha Itachi had defeated Nagato after being revived with Impure World Reincarnation by using simple Shurikenjutsu to eliminate the shared-vision advantage of the Six Paths of Pain.
Gong Yi smiled and formed Hand Seals at incredible speed.
"Teacher Ishii, is this what you mean by performing the Three Body Technique with ease?"
A clone identical to Gong Yi appeared in front of Ishii Kawa. It moved incredibly fast, then vanished. Gong Yi transformed into another Ishii Kawa.
In an instant, he had completed the Clone Technique and the Transformation Technique.
And that wasn't all. Just as Ishii Kawa was about to speak, the Gong Yi who'd transformed into Ishii Kawa suddenly turned into a log.
Gong Yi had already appeared in another corner of the office.
"T-this speed! That's already Genin level, isn't it? A genius!"
Ishii Kawa's mouth fell open in astonishment.
In fact, the Genin exam only tested the Three Body Technique and some basic ninja knowledge.
In other words, Gong Yi was already fully capable of Genin-level work. He could even consider graduating early.
And he'd reached this point after only two months at the Ninja Academy.
At that thought, Ishii Kawa suddenly understood why Gong Yi was so eager to learn Ninjutsu.
His student had already hit a bottleneck in a very short time.
The only way to go further was to develop his Ninjutsu.
"Teacher, what do you think?"
Ishii Kawa looked pleased. Then he suddenly asked, "How much Chakra do you have left?"
Being able to perform the Three Body Technique smoothly was one thing; having enough Chakra was another.
Even the most basic C-rank Ninjutsu required a terrifying amount of Chakra for a civilian ninja.
Civilian ninjas usually had to wait until their teens, when their bodies and minds had fully matured, before they had enough Chakra to use Ninjutsu freely.
Gong Yi knew that, of course. Chakra was produced by combining physical and mental energy.
After more than a month of intense training, his body was already as strong as an eleven- or twelve-year-old's. His physique stat had risen from five to twelve.
His mental stat was even higher, at thirty-one—one point more than before.
That meant the amount of Chakra he could produce at this stage was comparable to an ordinary Genin's, and even close to a Chunin's.
"Teacher, I still have eighty percent of my Chakra left!"
Ishii Kawa's eyes widened, and his gaze instinctively fell on Gong Yi's sturdy arms.
He murmured, "You still have that much Chakra? Then you should be able to use two C-rank Ninjutsu."
But a moment later, Ishii Kawa grew serious again. "Using the Three Body Technique isn't just about performing it under ordinary circumstances. What matters most is using it in battle. To make sure your foundations are solid, I'll give you my answer after today's practical lesson!"
Gong Yi wasn't worried at all. "All right. I'm looking forward to today's practical lesson too!"
Ishii Kawa couldn't help asking, "What if you lose in the practical lesson? Aren't you worried—"
"I won't lose!"
"Even if I pair you up with Kakashi?"
A confident light shone in Gong Yi's eyes. "That's perfect. I need someone to test my strength!"
