Uesugi Hara lowered his gaze, his eyes sweeping over her clenched fists. His voice carried a hint of inquiry: "You seem terrified of your secrets being exposed. Have you used similar tactics before?"
Kushida Kikyo stiffened, as if a raw, festering wound had been prodded. Those deeply buried memories surged back like a tidal wave—the blog incident in high school, the exposure, the collective rage of the class piercing her like blades. She had been forced to resort to even crazier "revelations" just to survive, even if it meant the class ended up in ruins and she became a "cancer" everyone avoided.
She tilted her head back, a flash of ruthlessness and resentment in her eyes. Her voice turned sharp, her mask torn away: "So what if I did? In high school, I was isolated and hated by everyone. I could only survive by clutching onto other people's secrets! I exposed the class's dirty laundry and revealed my classmates' secrets because they forced my hand! They only saw me going crazy; no one cared about the despair I felt when I was ignored and ostracized!"
Her chest heaved violently, filled with resentment for the past. "Now I work hard to maintain a perfect image. By what right do you get to destroy me with a recording?"
Uesugi Hara leaned in slightly, closing the distance between them. "So, are you planning to snatch these recordings back and repeat your old tricks? Use my secrets to shift the conflict onto someone else, and let me taste what it's like to be isolated?"
"I didn't intend to... but you forced me!" Kushida glared at him, her usual sweet smile shattered, leaving only hysteria. "I collect secrets and hide my past just so I won't be trampled into the mud again! If you dare to ruin me, I'll drag you down with me—I was already the 'villain' in high school, what's one more time!" She struggled, trying to break free from his restraint, her fingernails clawing wrinkles into the bedsheets.
Uesugi Hara sat up straight and tapped his knuckles lightly against the sheet. "I have no interest in becoming a sacrificial lamb in your high school class, dragged into the abyss by secrets." His voice was steady as he looked directly into her out-of-control eyes. "But if you want to go down in flames, feel free to try—though you should know, if I want to destroy you, I'll do it so thoroughly that not even a fragment of your 'perfect mask' will remain. And I have plenty of ways to walk away unscathed." He turned to the side, the morning light falling across his face, revealing a calm, scrutinizing expression.
Kushida's breath hitched, resentment and fear twisting together in her heart. She knew all too well the taste of "social ruin"; the nightmare of high school was enough to destroy everything she had now.
Yet, bowing her head to sue for peace was worse than death. She turned her face away, her voice trembling with stubbornness: "What exactly do you want... Don't think I'll just let you manipulate me!"
Uesugi Hara watched her struggle, slowly standing up from the bed. He smoothed his slightly wrinkled shirt and said calmly: "It's simple: cooperation. The audio recording is both a 'weapon' and a 'shackle.' If you don't listen, I'll make your high school history and this current breakdown public. If you cooperate, I'll help you stabilize your 'perfect image' and help you get rid of this rotten way of surviving by hurting others." He walked to the desk, his fingertips tracing the audio waveform. "Choose, Kushida Kikyo. Do you want to keep acting like a trapped beast, or do you want to play a more interesting 'game' with me?"
Kushida looked at him, a flicker of struggle in her eyes. Past trauma made her instinctively want to grab secrets as weapons, but the calmness of the boy before her made her realize that mutual destruction would only make her situation worse.
She bit her lip until it bled, speaking with deep reluctance: "...How do we cooperate?" The words sounded as if they were squeezed through her teeth.
Uesugi Hara turned back, a faint, ambiguous smile on his lips—a mix of understanding her struggle and anticipation for the "game" to unfold. "Starting tomorrow, you'll cooperate with me. I'll protect your reputation, and you'll play along in this scheme. Just like partners in a detective novel, using and checking each other... You have no choice."
Kushida gripped the sheets, staring fixedly at the ceiling. "Not enough! I also want you to help me get Horikita Suzune expelled."
Uesugi Hara raised an eyebrow, his fingertips tapping the edge of the desk; the sound was exceptionally clear in the quiet room. "Get Horikita Suzune expelled?" He looked down at the audio waveform on the computer screen—it was paused on the segment where Kushida called Horikita "that bitch." "Just based on these few complaints and the way you're currently 'under my thumb'?"
He turned and walked to the bedside, leaning over to look at her tense face. "You should understand that the stakes for cooperation must be equal. Right now, all you can offer is a promise to 'behave,' while what I can give you is the security of keeping your high school dark history and this breakdown under wraps."
He paused, tapping his fingertip on the sheet beside her ear. "You want me to help you deal with Horikita? Fine. But you have to show enough 'sincerity' first, for example..."
His words cut off abruptly, and Uesugi Hara's gaze shifted. He no longer looked at her tense face or the crumpled sheets, but slowly swept over her shoulders, her waistline, and finally rested on her chest—the morning light outlined the soft contours of her uniform shirt, the folds at the collar rising and falling with her rapid breathing. His gaze was undisguised, direct as if appraising an object, measuring the value of a "bargaining chip."
A chill ran down Kushida's spine. She instinctively wanted to pull her collar together, but before she could lift her wrist, she realized she was still pinned down by him—this helpless situation, combined with his lewd gaze, made her skin crawl.
"W-what are you looking at?!" Her voice was sharp with panic and anger, her cheeks burning bright red. The ruthlessness in her eyes was scattered by shame. "Uesugi Hara! You bastard!"
Uesugi Hara acted as if he hadn't heard her outburst. His fingertip moved slowly toward her collar, not touching the fabric but hovering in mid-air. His tone was as flat as if he were discussing the weather: "Tell me, if others saw you like this—flustered and angry, pinned to the bed by me—what would they think?" His gaze finally shifted back to her face, a hint of playfulness in his eyes. "Or, perhaps you could 'show' me something that makes me feel this 'transaction' is worth it?"
The words hit Kushida like a slap. She jerked her head away, trying to avoid his gaze, but her ears were filled with the sound of her own heartbeat and his eyes, which felt like they were burning through her clothes.
Humiliation crawled up her spine, but the thought of Horikita Suzune's cold face and the prospect of being cast back as the "cancer of high school" drained most of her strength to resist.
"O-okay..." Her voice was as thin as a gnat's, swallowed by the morning light. Kushida's cheeks were red enough to bleed, her neck taut as a pulled string, and even her earlobes were flushed with an unnatural heat.
Uesugi Hara raised an eyebrow, his fingertip still hovering by her collar, not moving an inch. "Okay what?" His tone was as flat as stagnant water, yet carried an inescapable pressure. "Is it 'okay to show sincerity,' or 'okay to let me manipulate you'? Be clear—since this is a transaction, I need to know exactly what you're agreeing to."
The words were like a needle, piercing the most sensitive part of Kushida's psyche. She snapped her eyes open, the moisture still lingering, and forced out a bit of ferocity: "Do you have to humiliate me like this?!" But meeting his emotionless gaze, that bit of ferocity deflated like a pricked balloon.
She bit her lower lip until she tasted blood, then squeezed out the words through her teeth: "...It's okay to show sincerity." Each word felt like it had been rolled around in her throat, dry and hard. "As long as you help me deal with Horikita, the 'sincerity' you want... I'll give it to you."
The last few words were almost slurred. She lowered her head quickly, staring at the wrinkles in the bedsheet, not daring to look into his eyes.
The uniform on her chest continued to rise and fall with her breathing. The spots he had appraised earlier felt like they were on fire, making her fingertips tremble—but compared to that, Horikita Suzune's cold face and the future she might repeat were far more terrifying.
