Ayanokoji begins school as Kitahara Seiichi’s seatmate in Class D. Their first exchange is brief, and Ayanokoji immediately returns to his characteristically indifferent demeanor 1.

He presents himself as an ordinary, unambitious student who wants a peaceful school life. However, he repeatedly acts from the background: advising Horikita Suzune on Class D’s problems, arranging the means to save Sudou, Yamauchi, and Ike from expulsion, and allowing Horikita to receive public credit for the solution 8 17.

Kitahara later confronts him with knowledge of the White Room and his connection to it. The subject provokes rare visible agitation from Ayanokoji; after Kitahara threatens to expose him, Ayanokoji agrees to a confidential alliance under strict conditions 70 71. Sakayanagi is subsequently told that Ayanokoji once belonged to the White Room and has promised to face her at full strength after she takes control of her class 74.
