That evening, at Bei Wei's home.
The dining table was laden with dishes, all cooked by Chen Lu.
"Zhang Yang, you have no idea how my friends reacted when they saw me today." Chen Lu was grinning from ear to ear. "Every one of them had their eyes popping out. They all praised me for finding such a good son-in-law."
It was not as though she had deliberately meant to show off.
But clothes were bought to be worn, not stored away at the bottom of a chest. Since she was meeting friends, naturally she had dressed herself in all her new finery.
And the results had far exceeded her expectations.
As Zhang Yang ate, he smiled and listened to Chen Lu recount what she had seen and heard during the day. He found it rather amusing.
He had not encountered this sort of seemingly melodramatic scenario in real life for a very long time. Everyone around him now knew his identity and capabilities. Whoever saw him either went out of their way to curry favor with him, treated him with utmost respect, or addressed him as Chairman Zhang.
It was lonely at the top. The vivid, ordinary rhythms of human life had long since drifted far, far away from him.
"Zhang Yang... don't blame Auntie for talking too much, but you two aren't getting any younger. Have you considered having a child?" Chen Lu looked at the exceptionally charming Zhang Yang beneath the lights and suddenly could not help saying it.
"Mom..." Bei Wei protested softly, giving her mother's arm a light tug.
"My fault, I spoke out of turn." Chen Lu came back to herself, realizing she had misspoken. "Auntie was just speaking from the heart and couldn't hold it in. Zhang Yang, don't take it to heart."
