Another Round of Reading?

"Fahai?"

A flicker of surprise passed through Huiyan's eyes as he repeated the name softly.

He fell silent for a moment, as though savoring it, before slowly saying:

"'Fa' refers to the Buddha's teachings, the true Dharma, and precepts."

"'Hai' means depth, vastness, tolerance, and wisdom."

"Fahai signifies upholding the true Dharma with profound wisdom—like the sea embracing a hundred rivers, and like the sea washing away filth and dust."

"This Dharma name... is acceptable!"

He looked at Guy with a deeper meaning in his gaze.

Then he said to Chiriku, who stood waiting at the side:

"For now, Chiriku will guide you in your cultivation and daily routine."

"Chiriku, take Junior Brother Fahai to settle into the meditation quarters and familiarize himself with the temple rules."

"Yes, Abbot," Chiriku answered respectfully.

Guy rose, put on the gray martial monk's robes, and pressed his palms together in a bow to Huiyan.

"Thank you, Abbot."

Huiyan nodded without another word, then closed his eyes and resumed chanting.

Guy followed Chiriku out of the meditation chamber.

Chiriku glanced at Guy's freshly shaved head, a strange look flashing through his eyes.

But he quickly returned to calmness, pressed his palms together, and said, "Junior Brother Fahai, please follow me."

With that, he led Guy deeper into the temple.

Guy followed at an unhurried pace, taking in his surroundings.

As they walked, Chiriku introduced the temple in a calm voice:

"Though we martial monks of Fire Temple place great importance on cultivation and the strength to protect the temple, we must also strictly observe monastic rules and diligently study the Buddha's teachings."

"At the hour of the tiger, we rise with the morning bell. After washing up, we attend morning chanting in the main hall for two hours."

"At the hour of the dragon,
