Definition

A Martial Artist is a practitioner who has condensed Blood Qi and crossed the threshold from basic martial training into recognized combat ability. In the slums of Zhao City, martial strength determines whether a person can live securely, resist gang exploitation, or hold social standing; the Black Wolf Gang’s leader rules Bitter Locust Village through such power. 1

Martial Artists are not automatically government officials. Those who succeed in the government-run Martial Selection may receive the official title of Martial Guard, gaining an assigned post and tax, military-service, and corvée exemptions for three generations of their direct family. 15

Combat Force

The first three strands of Blood Qi principally develop external force: integrating physical strength, tempering the physique, and controlling the body through the “Three External Harmonies” of shoulders and hips, elbows and knees, and hands and feet. External force primarily harms from the outside inward, while internal force damages from within. 62

Higher-level practitioners may employ Dark Force and Transformation Force. Dark Force Martial Artists with at least Six-Wick Blood Qi lead Commandant’s Mansion patrol squads, while Transformation Force is powerful enough to overcome defenses that ordinary Six-Wick Martial Artists cannot penetrate. 110 136

Social Status

Martial Artists occupy a privileged and dangerous place in society.

• Scarcity — Martial Artists with two strands of Blood Qi are rare enough that wealthy patrons actively compete to hire them. 47
• Authority — Their strength can secure deference from gangs, merchants, officials, and ordinary residents. A newly advanced Blood Qi Martial Artist may be treated as a formal disciple of a major hall rather than as an ordinary slum resident. 16
• Official advancement — Martial Guards may serve as Patrol Guard Bureau officers, City Guard Army leaders, or holders of other government posts. 15
• Factional value — Major clans, martial halls, sects, and government forces recruit talented practitioners because martial ability grants access to authority, resources, and military merit. 161 169

Training and Resources

Martial cultivation is resource-intensive. Blood-boosting powders, medicinal herbs, pills, exotic-beast meat, and specialized martial instruction are all necessary to maintain rapid progress; practitioners summarize this burden as the difference between the “literary-poor” and the “martial-rich.” 36

Martial halls provide one route into the profession, though their contracts can be severe:

• Dragon Mountain Martial Hall’s Lower Academy requires a Death-Pledge Contract: trainees must cultivate Blood Qi within six months or serve the hall for five years. 4
• Advancement to the Middle Academy may require either substantial silver or a harsher contract requiring the disciple to reach Nine-Wick Blood Qi and obtain a Martial Guard title; failure can bind them to thirty years of service. 15
• Martial Artists bound by such contracts cannot freely accept outside employment, even when guard and escort work offers substantial pay. 19

Aptitude and Limits

A Martial Artist’s long-term potential depends on innate physique, martial compatibility, comprehension, luck, and access to resources. A constitution suited to one art may be unsuitable for another; obstructed meridians, stiff joints, and uncoordinated muscles can render a person effectively incapable of ordinary martial training. 101

Most practitioners eventually reach a personal upper limit. Some fail to condense even a second wick of Blood Qi, while others stagnate or decline after reaching a certain stage. Exceptional Martial Artists who continue advancing into old age are extraordinarily rare. 142

Combat Roles

Martial Artists may apply their abilities in several professions:

• Patrol and law enforcement — Patrol Guard Bureau hires conduct undercover patrols, assist arrests, and hunt fugitives. 27
• Guarding and escort work — Martial Artists protect warehouses and escort merchant caravans, though such work carries a constant risk of death. 19
• Military service — Martial Guards and Ti Cavalry hold genuine authority, with the latter standing distinctly above ordinary martial-hall disciples. 38

Martial Artists may specialize in different forms of cultivation rather than sharing one uniform fighting style.

The martial path is defined by violent competition and high mortality.
