  • Shen Mi explains that Frost Bone White strengthens bones, tendons, and one’s innate physique. Its value has risen from roughly three hundred taels before the northern war to at least six hundred taels now.
  • Chen Cheng realizes that Fuchang Firm’s access to such medicine indicates powerful and complicated connections beyond ordinary Green Forest forces. He suspects the firm may be preparing to seize the Merchant Charter during the year-end contest, possibly with a peak Five-Incense Blood Qi expert.
  • Chen Cheng visits Elder Wen, who praises his success in the Inner Hall assessment and jokes about how he deceived the Inner City nobles. Elder Wen admits that Chen Cheng’s rapid progress has surpassed his expectations. Chen Cheng then sparrs with him to continue improving.
  • Zhu Mingyuan delivers Chen Cheng’s promised reward from Ye Yang: five doses of Blood-Boosting and Essence-Nourishing Soup. He reports that Ye Yang was seriously ambushed by a mysterious man in black wearing a bamboo hat.
  • The attacker displayed terrifying concealment abilities: Ye Yang detected no footsteps, heartbeat, breath, body odor, Blood Qi, or killing intent, and could not clearly see the man’s face. Chen Cheng suspects the attacker may be a remnant of Red Moon Nunnery who knows the Moon Breath of Avici technique.
  • The reason for the attack remains unclear. Chen Cheng wonders whether the assailant believed Ye Yang possessed the Red Moon Original Vow Sutra, had another connection to the nunnery, or was simply trying to create chaos.
  • Zhu Mingyuan also reports that the investigation into Xiao Yi’s murder has stalled. The bodies were destroyed and left no useful clues, while the Wu Family’s promise to investigate is viewed as largely meaningless in the lawless Outer City.
  • Meanwhile, Chen Cheng’s success causes a wave of attention in Peaceful Lane. Officials, gang leaders, neighbors, and the landlord all bring gifts or money to Madam Li in an effort to honor or curry favor with the newly distinguished martial artist. Madam Li eventually entrusts more than twenty taels in gifts to Fatty Fang for delivery to Chen Cheng.
  • At the Inner Hall entrance, Fatty Fang encounters Cao Zhao. Cao Zhao provokes him by implying that Fatty Fang is too cowardly to return to the Inner Hall and claims that, because Ye Yang is injured, he is temporarily managing the Middle Academy.

  • Resource monopolization and social inequality: Valuable medicines, beast meat, techniques, and opportunities are controlled by elites, leaving ordinary martial artists with few ways to advance.
  • The cost of advancement: Every available path—serving a powerful family, joining a sect, or entering official service—requires major sacrifices and carries serious risks.
  • Dependence versus independence: Qiao Qiao’s reliance on Chen Cheng provides her a path forward, but also shows how difficult it is for someone from the lowest social level to make independent choices.
  • Imitation and mentorship: Qiao Qiao copies Chen Cheng because he represents the only successful model she trusts. Chen Cheng recognizes that guidance must come through actions rather than words.
  • Survival in a cruel society: Qiao Qiao’s childhood and the discussion of the Dark Brothel and other abuses emphasize the brutality of the world she escaped.

  • Chen Cheng initially tries to correct her but ultimately chooses understanding over criticism, recognizing the fear and desperation behind her behavior.
  • Ye Yang and Ye Qiluo’s separate attempts to support or recruit Qiao Qiao demonstrate the growing competition surrounding her future.

Ch. 97Great Calamity

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • The chapter opens by explaining the origin of Great Shang’s name. Its founding ancestor rejected grand, auspicious names and chose “Shang” to honor the heroic dead and comfort grieving souls. He established the annual Mourning Sacrifice Festival, held for seven days beginning on the ninth day of the eleventh month.
  • In the freezing Outer City, Chen Cheng and Zhu Mingyuan travel toward the Inner City. Zhu mentions that people in the slums are already freezing and starving to death, reminding Chen of the harsh conditions facing his mother, Madam Li, and the danger of winter-driven unrest.
  • Zhu notices that Chen’s Blood Qi and physical strength have grown rapidly despite his intense training. Chen admits to using rare restorative resources but conceals their true source.
  • Chen reflects on the supplies sent by Lin Fengxiao: Strange Tiger Jerky and Three Treasures Foundation-Cultivating Pills. After having them verified by Shen Bi, he accepts them as genuine repayment and plans to use them to cultivate in seclusion for the next month.
  • After entering the Inner City, Chen witnesses the sharp contrast between its prosperity and the Outer City’s poverty. The Inner City is brightly decorated for the festival, while wealthy residents enjoy refined incense and festive abundance. Chen recalls how difficult it is for slum residents to obtain even the supposedly medicinal ashes of ordinary incense.
  • At a meeting point, Chen and Zhu join Cao Zhao and a group of young martial artists. Cao introduces Chen as a Middle Academy prodigy who has reached Four-Incense Blood Qi, mastered Dark Force, quickly learned the Heavenly God Subduing Dragon Map’s Force Penetrating Thunder Tip, and become Master Ye’s disciple.
  • Chen meets the twin Upper Academy students Zhou Ping and Zhou An, as well as Gu Kaishen, a twenty-five-year-old genius who has reached Seven-Wick Blood Qi and Transformation Force.
  • Zhuang Zhuang approaches Chen privately to ask about the Four Gods Profound Body cultivation method. Chen reveals that he has already gained entry into it after less than ten days.
  • Zhuang Zhuang is stunned and overjoyed, since generations of her lineage—including herself despite her extraordinary talent—have failed to master the technique. She urgently asks Chen to teach her, and he agrees, viewing it as repayment for her earlier help. He returns the beast-hide record of the God-Rearing Chapter to her.
  • Their conversation is interrupted by thunderous drums and gongs. A large crimson-robed ceremonial formation enters the street, combining dance, battle formation, and mourning ritual. Its overwhelming presence evokes Great Shang’s military power, national destiny, and reverence for the heroic dead.

Character Developments

  • Chen Cheng continues to grow rapidly in both physical strength and martial cultivation. He becomes increasingly cautious about concealing his unusual resources and abilities, recognizing that his progress could attract suspicion.
  • Chen also shows greater independence and ambition. He plans to rent a safer residence and enter extended seclusion, hoping to make a major breakthrough before the year ends.
  • His concern for Madam Li and awareness of the suffering in the slums reveal that, despite his rising status, he remains emotionally connected to his origins.
  • Zhu Mingyuan is shown as observant, friendly, and practical. He recognizes Chen’s abnormal progress but respects Chen’s reluctance to explain it.
  • Zhuang Zhuang reveals profound emotional investment in the Four Gods Profound Body. Her initial anxiety turns into disbelief, admiration, gratitude, and hope when Chen says he has mastered its entry requirements.
  • Gu Kaishen is introduced as a powerful young genius. His interest in Zhuang Zhuang, followed by his cold withdrawal when she chooses to approach Chen, hints at jealousy or wounded pride.
  • Ye Qiluo openly dismisses Chen’s accomplishments but actively seeks Gu Kaishen’s attention because of his status as a Transformation Force prodigy.
  • Cao Zhao acts as a social connector and enthusiastic supporter of Chen, proudly presenting Chen’s achievements to the Inner City group.

Significant Themes

  • Class inequality: The festival’s splendor in the Inner City contrasts starkly with the Outer City’s frozen corpses, starvation, and lack of medical resources.
  • The gap between ideals and reality: Great Shang’s founding myth emphasizes remembrance of the dead and compassion, yet the living poor remain neglected. Even charitable acts, such as distributing incense ashes, are limited and often treated as displays of virtue by the wealthy.
  • Mourning, national identity, and power: The festival is both a religious remembrance and a public demonstration of Great Shang’s historical and military grandeur. The ceremonial formation transforms grief into a spectacle of national strength.
  • Talent and inheritance: The Four Gods Profound Body represents an inherited, generations-long failure for Zhuang Zhuang’s lineage. Chen’s rapid success challenges assumptions about natural limits and lineage-based superiority.
  • Secrecy and trust: Chen must hide the origin of his resources and the extent of his abilities, while choosing to trust Zhuang Zhuang with the knowledge of his breakthrough.
  • Reciprocity and karmic debt: Chen’s willingness to teach Zhuang Zhuang reflects his desire to repay her past assistance and maintain moral balance.

Important Character Interactions

  • Chen Cheng and Zhu Mingyuan: They discuss winter deaths, Chen’s cultivation progress, and the rare resources fueling it. Their friendship is marked by curiosity, restraint, and mutual respect.
  • Chen Cheng and Cao Zhao: Cao introduces Chen enthusiastically, publicly elevating his reputation among Inner City martial artists.
  • Chen Cheng and the Zhou twins: Their formal but cordial exchange establishes them as friendly Upper Academy seniors.
  • Chen Cheng and Gu Kaishen: Chen respectfully acknowledges Gu’s Transformation Force achievement, but Gu responds with detached politeness before refocusing on Zhuang Zhuang.
  • Chen Cheng and Zhuang Zhuang: Their private conversation forms the emotional center of the chapter. Chen’s revelation that he has entered the Four Gods Profound Body leaves Zhuang Zhuang overwhelmed, and his promise to teach her creates a stronger bond between them.
  • Zhuang Zhuang and Gu Kaishen: Gu appears interested in her, but she ignores him to speak with Chen. This unsettles Gu and allows Ye Qiluo to pursue his attention.
  • Ye Qiluo and Gu Kaishen: Ye deliberately takes advantage of Gu’s isolation from Zhuang Zhuang, seeking to strengthen her relationship with the powerful young genius.

  • The Outer City Ti Cavalryman's urgent arrival highlights the contrast between the two cities and the potential danger in the Outer City.

Ch. 99Blood Robe

Chapter Summary

Key Plot Points and Events

  • An Outer City Ti Cavalry rider reports that Red Moon Nunnery remnants have attacked a residence in Annan Ward, ambushing Patrol Office forces and causing heavy casualties.
  • Yu Feng orders the rider to seek reinforcements from the Commandant’s Mansion, saying he must first report to the Director of Records before joining the battle.
  • Chen Cheng uses the crisis as an excuse to leave and check on his mother, Madam Li, who lives near the fighting.
  • On entering the residential district, Chen Cheng finds widespread destruction, dead constables, and civilian casualties. The bodies reveal two distinct enemy methods: lethal blade attacks and bizarre techniques that drain or desiccate victims.
  • He discovers that the attackers have looted the dead, suggesting their violence is connected not only to fanaticism but also to the search for valuable items.
  • Chen Cheng encounters nine Red Moon Cultists: eight Blood-Robed followers and a completely covered, bamboo-hatted leader whom he recognizes as the mysterious figure who previously saw through his Moon Step of Impermanence and injured Ye Yang.
  • The Bamboo-Hat Stranger commands the cultists to kill everyone they encounter until the Moon Marrow is surrendered. One cultist heads toward Peaceful Lane, where Chen Cheng’s mother is located.
  • Meanwhile, civilians gather near Longshan Lower Academy for protection. Chen An and Madam Bai arrive to check on Madam Li, who is safe and being sheltered because of Chen Cheng’s growing reputation.
  • Chen Cheng secretly follows the Blood-Robed Cultist through the narrow alleys of Peaceful Lane and chooses an ideal ambush point.
  • He launches a full-strength attack on the cultist’s heart. The enemy narrowly avoids the punch and attempts to slash Chen Cheng’s throat.
  • Chen Cheng unexpectedly uses the newly mastered trait of Moon Step of Impermanence, Instant Shift, shifting twice in succession: once to extend his punch and again to evade the knife.
  • His punch severely crushes the cultist’s chest. When the cultist hesitates in disbelief, Chen Cheng follows with a devastating knee strike that sends him crashing into a wall.
  • Just as Chen Cheng moves to finish the wounded cultist, he senses a sudden new danger, ending the chapter on a cliffhanger.

Character Developments

  • Chen Cheng: Demonstrates increased calm, tactical awareness, stealth, and combat mastery. He prioritizes protecting his mother while carefully avoiding unnecessary exposure. His nine days of training have allowed him to advance Moon Step of Impermanence to minor mastery and unlock Instant Shift, giving him a decisive advantage.
  • Yu Feng: Appears cautious and politically restrained. Rather than immediately rushing into the battle, he delegates the request for aid and prioritizes reporting to his superior, hinting at institutional complications or possible suspicion.
  • Madam Li: Shows clear awareness that much of the respect she now receives is due to Chen Cheng’s rising status. She remains grateful but understands the social realities behind her improved treatment.
  • Chen An and Madam Bai: Their hurried visit reflects genuine concern for Madam Li and shows that Chen Cheng’s success has strengthened his family’s ties and social standing.
  • The Blood-Robed Cultist: Revealed to be highly skilled, possessing near peak Five-Incense Blood Qi, excellent reflexes, and refined knife techniques. Despite this, the cultist is psychologically shaken by Chen Cheng’s unprecedented consecutive Instant Shifts.
  • The Bamboo-Hat Stranger: Remains mysterious and threatening. Their unnatural alternating male and female voices, total concealment, and command over the cultists reinforce their inhuman and enigmatic nature.

Significant Themes

  • The divide between Inner and Outer City: While the Inner City celebrates the festival, the Outer City suffers slaughter and fear, emphasizing the stark inequality and danger separating the two worlds.
  • The fragility of ordinary lives: Civilians, constables, and even a Constable Chief are helpless before the Red Moon Cultists, showing how quickly social order collapses during supernatural violence.
  • Reputation and power: Madam Li receives protection and respect largely because of Chen Cheng’s status, demonstrating how influence can determine a person’s safety and social value.
  • Fanaticism and hidden networks: Although the Red Moon Nunnery’s main base was destroyed, its scattered believers remain embedded among ordinary citizens and can mobilize instantly.
  • Innovation overcoming established limits: Chen Cheng’s Instant Shift breaks the known limitation of Moon Step of Impermanence, allowing him to defeat an opponent who understood the technique’s normal weaknesses.
  • Violence beneath ordinary life: Familiar streets, homes, and neighborhoods become battlefields, contrasting everyday domestic relationships with sudden brutality.

Character Interactions

  • The Ti Cavalry rider urgently reports the crisis to Yu Feng, who gives him orders to request further reinforcements.
  • Yu Feng briefly looks toward Chen Cheng, while Chen Cheng tells Zhuang Zhuang that he must visit his mother and leaves before she can respond.
  • Chen An and Madam Bai anxiously check on Madam Li, strengthening the sense of family and community under threat.
  • Neighbors reassure Madam Li and praise Chen Cheng, while a baby’s attempt to say “Master Cheng” briefly lifts the crowd’s spirits.
  • The Bamboo-Hat Stranger commands the eight cultists to spread out and kill indiscriminately.
  • Chen Cheng and the Blood-Robed Cultist engage in a close-range battle of deception, timing, and technique, with Chen Cheng’s unexpected double Instant Shift turning the fight decisively in his favor.

Ch. 100Treasure

Chapter Summary

1. Key Plot Points and Events

  • The severely injured Blood-Robed Cultist unexpectedly rises and continues fighting despite Chen Cheng’s earlier ambush having supposedly destroyed his heart and lungs.
  • Chen Cheng realizes that the cultist’s Blood-Colored Cloak is not ordinary clothing. Its strange, elastic hide absorbs and disperses part of the force from his attacks, protecting the cultist’s vital organs.
  • The cultist, despite having a crippled right arm, shattered chest, and severe internal injuries, fights with remarkable skill using his left arm and legs. Chen Cheng recognizes how dangerous the Red Moon Cultists are, especially after recalling that eight similarly powerful enemies contributed to Tang Yunlong’s death.
  • Rather than continue attacking recklessly, Chen Cheng changes tactics. He uses evasive footwork and probing attacks to force the cultist into increasingly broad movements, causing his existing wounds to reopen and worsen.
  • Once the cultist’s breathing and blood flow become chaotic, Chen Cheng exploits the opening on his unguarded right side. He delivers a Crushing Thunder punch that completely destroys the cultist’s head, killing him.
  • Chen Cheng strips the Blood-Colored Cloak from the corpse and tests it. He discovers that the cloak can neutralize roughly twenty percent of both Clear Force and Dark Force. It is also extraordinarily durable and sheds blood and debris without retaining any stains.
  • He takes the cloak and the cultist’s twisted short blade, disguising both as bundles of old clothing with scraps of cloth and a clothesline. He removes his traces and leaves before authorities arrive.
  • Patrol Guard martial artists and soldiers from the Commandant’s Mansion later discover the corpse. Shen Chun angrily calls for pursuit, but Li Shun warns that the Red Moon Cultists are too dangerous for them to split up. Shen Chun ignores him and rushes ahead.
  • Chen Cheng washes the blood from his hands at a well before returning to his mother. He finds the neighborhood crowded, and the residents respectfully make way for him because of his status.
  • He tells Madam Li that they must move immediately. When she protests out of concern for money and familiarity with the neighborhood, the neighbors defend Chen Cheng’s filial intentions.
  • Chen Cheng reveals that their new home is in the Inner City, astonishing his mother and the surrounding residents, who view the Inner City as an almost unreachable place of safety and privilege.

2. Character Developments

  • Chen Cheng demonstrates increasing combat intelligence and caution. Instead of relying solely on overwhelming strength, he identifies the cloak’s defensive function, adapts his strategy, patiently waits for the right opening, and kills the cultist efficiently.
  • He also shows meticulousness and practicality by cleaning himself, concealing the stolen treasures, and ensuring no evidence connects him to the killing.
  • Chen Cheng’s concern for his mother becomes more prominent. Despite the danger, he prioritizes moving her to a safer and more prestigious residence before nightfall.
  • The Blood-Robed Cultist is revealed to be extraordinarily resilient and technically skilled. Even while mortally wounded and partially crippled, he maintains a nearly flawless defense, emphasizing the threat posed by the Red Moon Cult.
  • Li Shun is cautious and disciplined. He understands that the cultists are unusually powerful and tries to prevent Shen Chun from acting recklessly.
  • Shen Chun is courageous and furious over the slaughter of civilians, but her anger makes her impulsive; she ignores Li Shun’s warning and pursues the cultists alone.
  • Madam Li remains humble and frugal, initially resisting the move because she does not want Chen Cheng to waste money. Her reaction to the Inner City reflects both disbelief and the vast change in her son’s position.
  • The neighbors’ behavior shows how greatly Chen Cheng’s social status and reputation have risen: ordinary residents now regard him with fear, awe, and reverence.

3. Significant Themes

  • Adaptability and strategic intelligence: Chen Cheng wins not merely through power, but by studying his opponent, changing tactics, and exploiting accumulated injuries.
  • The hidden value of treasures: The Blood-Colored Cloak represents the importance of recognizing and testing unusual objects rather than judging them by appearance.
  • The danger of the Red Moon Cult: The cultists’ strength, cruelty, and ability to kill powerful martial artists establish them as a major threat to the city.
  • Caution versus recklessness: Chen Cheng’s careful approach contrasts with Shen Chun’s emotional decision to pursue alone, suggesting that courage without judgment can be dangerous.
  • Filial duty and social advancement: Chen Cheng’s decision to move his mother into the Inner City reflects his success and his desire to protect and provide for her.
  • Class and status: The residents’ fearful deference toward Chen Cheng and their disbelief at his access to the Inner City highlight the widening gap between his former life and his current position.
  • Concealment and survival: Chen Cheng repeatedly avoids leaving evidence, disguises his spoils, and carefully cleans himself, emphasizing the necessity of secrecy in a dangerous and politically tense environment.

4. Character Interactions

  • Chen Cheng and the Blood-Robed Cultist engage in a prolonged, tactical battle in which Chen Cheng gradually wears down the cultist before delivering the killing blow.
  • Li Shun attempts to restrain Shen Chun, emphasizing cooperation and obedience to the Commandant’s orders, but she rejects his caution and pursues the enemy alone.
  • Chen Cheng and Madam Li display a familiar mother-son dynamic: she worries about his spending and safety, while he firmly insists on protecting her and improving her living conditions.
  • Young Mistress Ma and Sister-in-law Wang encourage Madam Li to accept Chen Cheng’s filial gesture and offer to help with the move, showing the neighborhood’s changing attitude toward him.
  • The surrounding residents treat Chen Cheng with overwhelming respect, contrasting sharply with the ordinary communal familiarity he once might have enjoyed.
