Only Salomon maintained a polite smile—his back was to Dave, making it seem as though he were listening attentively to Dave's chatter.
In truth, he was multitasking, listening to Dave while slowly counting the personnel and vehicles below. Salomon mentally calculated whether the next list of fuel, ammunition, and food supplies provided by the Military Affairs Department matched the actual situation. His efficiency far surpassed that of every actuary in the Internal Affairs Department.
Yet after Salomon spent more than ten minutes calculating the amount of military supplies this camp would need in its next shipment, Dave's mouth showed no sign of stopping. He had gotten to the part where Betty found a job after graduating, then used her first paycheck to buy him pizza. It moved Dave, who had been dressed like a homeless man at the time, to tears. There had been nothing good to eat on that planet, and after Merlin dumped him there, he had fled without looking back, lest his disciples rush over and make him stay. Now Dave planned to use some funds to rent an apartment and move in with Betty. However, the Merlin School was dirt poor. Not even Merlin had a single coin in his pockets; that old man lived
