True gods were all monsters. That was the first lesson the Emperor learned when studying the nature of the Outer Dimensions.

Earth pantheons such as Olympus and Asgard were merely beings of the Material Universe, descended generation by generation after Outer Dimensional power entered the Material Universe. Though they possessed immense power, they were not true gods. True gods did not weep and had no humanity, because they were gods, while humans were merely ants at their feet. Yet humans would not demand that ants offer up ant eggs as proof of faith. Nor would they light a branch, shout atop an anthill, or write in ant script on a stone and demand that the colony obey rules made by humans.

But trying to speculate about Outer Dimensional Entities through human logic would ultimately lead to utter madness. Gods were the monsters hidden behind the Veil of Reality, the nightmares lurking beneath beds at night and the horrors found throughout countless myths. Humanity could not comprehend their thoughts. Just as humans could not imagine that every flicker from a nebula made of cosmic dust, hydrogen, helium, and other plasma in the dark universe was a neural signal produced by the universe's thoughts, they could not understand the eternal wars waged by the most powerful spiritual entities in the Outer Dimensions. Nor could they understand that the Material Universe was both an immensely important stake and battlefield in that war.

To gain the leverage needed to win the eternal war within the Material Universe, they needed its living beings to offer up souls and emotions, feeding their ever-swelling bodies and filling the chessboard of their game. Just as a vast ant colony offered food to its queen day after day, they needed the beings of the Material Universe to offer everything,
