These two routes would be assaulted by a combined offensive from the First Combat Group and Second Combat Group: the First, Second, and Third Legions, a small number of Sisterhood combat personnel, and the Mortal auxiliary army would participate in the frontal attack. Although the special squads Malcolm had arranged bore the First Legion's markings, Aparajita was certain he did not know any of their commanders. He believed the Legion Commanders of the Second and Third Legions would not know them either—just a small trick of military organization. Unlike the nominal positions and ranks some nations used specifically for nepotism, these postings existed for secrecy. Before the Gene-modded Warriors officially appeared, First Legion members such as Malcolm, Aparajita, and Nelson had been attached to the City of Immortals security forces, receiving funding and training under that name to prevent unrelated personnel in the City of Immortals from discovering the Gene-modded Warrior project through personnel transfers.
Without question, these special forces were also one of the Emperor's little secrets.
Master Wong and Master Wu Guiyue, leaders of two Kamar-Taj Arcanist squads, had already led their teams to rest near the command vehicles. This was not the first time Aparajita's First Legion warriors had operated alongside the Kamar-Taj Arcanists. In Paititi, deep in the Peruvian jungles of South America, and at the Vatoum Temple, the Gene-modded Warriors had crossed paths with these Kamar-Taj Arcanists. The slaughter at the Vatoum Temple in particular had proclaimed the Emperor's authority over Earth's many magical schools. That authority was a crown forged jointly by Kamar-Taj and the First Legion.
