The blazing sunlight could not penetrate the thick linen hood. Inanna could not see the Eternal's expression, but she could guess that Icarus found this fact as hard to accept as she did. No immortal, no eternal being—not even the demigods walking the earth or the immortals created by the Celestials—would accept that they were merely food in the eyes of the Celestials. Whether out of pride or honor, Icarus instinctively denied it. After the Emperor finished speaking, the dry air over the desertified black wasteland rapidly heated up, as though some powerful force had broken free of its restraints, pierced through the air around Icarus, and lunged at the Emperor.
