This was destined to be a desperate war.
The Tesseract and the Time Gate were controlled by the enemy, and wave after wave of military forces were being deployed. This was an array of forces they should have faced years later, but now they had neither Wakanda's army and technology, nor Thor, who had mastered divine power and gained new weapons, nor the formidable Scarlet Witch.
Even though Tony kept bombarding them with weapons and fought alongside the other superheroes, the monsters, surging forward like a tide, were steadily devouring all their hope.
"Retreat! Retreat!" Fury shouted. He charged out of the command center carrying an exaggerated-looking weapon. "We've already lost! They outnumber us by far. If you die, the entire Earth will lose its last hope!"
A single superhero seemed utterly useless against an alien monster army like this.
Even Hulk was being suppressed by layer after layer of monsters.
Steve raised his head.
He saw one enormous Floating Dragon after another crawling out of the Time Gate. Those were supposed to be the enemies they would prepare to face.
But now, those enemies had become the final straw crushing them.
That's right. This war had already been lost.
Steve gripped his shield tightly and attacked with his fists. He had no intention of retreating. Despair could not bring him down. As a soldier, he only needed to keep fighting.
"Captain, stop charging in!" Tony's battleship flew over, seized Steve by the arm, and carried him into the air. High above, they faced dozens of Floating Dragons.
And the rising sun.
This scene seemed destined to become a symbol filled with tragedy and epic grandeur.
Steve said nothing.
He merely clung tightly to Tony's cold mechanical arm, gripping it so hard that he nearly left marks in the metal.
