Ch. 101Battle of the Sannin
Plot points and events
- Lin Mu considers how summoning contracts are obtained, decides to ask Jiraiya later, and turns his attention back to the confrontation.
- The three Sannin and their summons—Gamabunta, Manda, and Katsuyu—prepare to fight. Tsunade declares that the Sannin’s bond ends that day.
- Katsuyu attacks Manda with corrosive acid, but Manda blocks it with a boulder, then coils around her. Katsuyu escapes by splitting into many smaller slugs and re-forming.
- Manda overpowers Gamabunta, disarming him and flinging his sword. Jiraiya and Gamabunta combine oil and fire in a massive attack, but Manda survives by shedding his skin.
- Manda emerges from underground and nearly swallows Gamabunta. Tsunade uses the thrown sword to pin Manda’s head to the ground.
- Orochimaru, pressured by facing Jiraiya and Tsunade together, ensnares Tsunade with his tongue and threatens to strangle or decapitate her.
Character developments and interactions
- Lin Mu suppresses his envy of those with summoning beasts and resolves to seek Jiraiya’s guidance.
- Jiraiya recognizes Orochimaru’s danger and coordinates effectively with Gamabunta, while remaining wary of Orochimaru’s evasive abilities.
- Tsunade acts decisively, shifting from impatience to direct intervention by saving Gamabunta and striking at Manda.
- Orochimaru rejects Jiraiya’s appeal to their former comradeship, fights strategically, and begins to feel the strain of facing two Sannin.
- The summons display distinct strengths: Manda is powerful and cunning, Gamabunta is a bold fighter, and Katsuyu can survive devastating restraint by dividing herself.
Significant themes
- Broken bonds: The former comradeship among the Sannin has collapsed into open hostility.
- Teamwork and counterplay: Jiraiya, Tsunade, and their summons support one another, but Orochimaru repeatedly evades their attacks.
- Resilience and adaptability: Katsuyu’s division and Manda’s shed-skin escape show how difficult each opponent is to defeat.
