Ch. 361Jiraiya's Life Mattered Too
Key plot points and events
- Kazahana Koyuki asks Tsunade and Gentō to recover a crystal necklace left by her father, the late Snow daimyo Kazahana Sōsetsu. She offers an unusually large reward of thirty million ryō.
- Koyuki says her cousin, Kazahana Shinta, has gathered ninja and occupied the ruins of the Land of Whirlpools, where the necklace is being held.
- Gentō recognizes the necklace as the key to Sōsetsu’s Geothermal Device, built to melt the Land of Snow’s ice and create a warmer climate. Sōsetsu was murdered by his brother Dōtō, who wrongly believed the device was a weapon; Dōtō seized it but never learned its real purpose.
- Gentō questions Koyuki about the necklace. Her evasive answers and the mission’s suspicious details—including the huge payment and information about a “Church Base”—make Tsunade doubt the story. She returns the money and refuses to risk Jiraiya’s life on a mission whose true purpose is concealed.
- Gentō nevertheless agrees to take the mission, then offers to buy the necklace directly from Koyuki.
Character developments and interactions
- Tsunade is initially tempted by the payment, partly thinking of Jiraiya’s finances, but ultimately prioritizes his safety over the reward. Her experience with deceptive mission clients makes her alert to Koyuki’s omissions.
- Gentō sees through Koyuki’s pretense and understands the necklace’s importance. Rather than simply accept the mission, he challenges her and proposes purchasing the keepsake.
- Koyuki is grieving and deeply attached to her father’s last possession, but her guarded responses suggest she knows—or suspects—that the necklace is more than an ornament. Gentō’s offer catches her by surprise.
- Asama Sandayū tries to reassure the visitors that the mission is safe, but his insistence only adds to their suspicion.
Significant themes
- Truth and concealed motives: Koyuki’s incomplete account makes the mission suspect despite her emotional appeal.
- The cost of a mission: Tsunade refuses to treat Jiraiya’s life as expendable, even for an exceptionally large reward.
- Misunderstanding and power: Dōtō’s ambition and mistaken belief about the device led him to kill his brother and seize a project whose true purpose he never understood.
- Legacy and attachment: The necklace represents Koyuki’s bond with her father as well as his hope of transforming the Land of Snow.
