Bane, one of Batman's most famous archenemies.

Among Gotham City's ranks of Super Villains, his status was second only to Joker, Batman's number-one obsessive fan.

The reason he had attained such a lofty position largely came down to one iconic scene in DC comic history, one so classic it had gone down in history.

It was the battle where Bane and Batman co-starred in the Backbreaking Incident.

In the comics, Bane displayed astonishing cunning as soon as he arrived in Gotham City. From just a few scattered clues, he deduced that Batman was Bruce Wayne, then immediately began plotting against him.

First, he led his men in breaking into Arkham Asylum and released a whole host of Super Villains, including Joker, Two-Face, and Scarecrow. Batman was forced to spend days racing all over the city, hunting down the escaped Super Villains.

Meanwhile, Bane hid in the shadows, watching Batman's every move.

By the time Batman finally cleaned up the mess and dragged his cold-ridden, exhausted body back to Wayne Manor, he found Bane had already been waiting for him at home for quite some time.

At that point, Batman was on the verge of collapse both physically and mentally, so naturally he was no match for Bane. The entire fight was a one-sided beatdown, with Bane pinning him to the ground and ruthlessly grinding him down.

But Bane did not choose to kill Batman. Instead, he chose a crueler method: he broke Batman's spine and put him in a wheelchair, cosplaying Professor X from next door in order to torment both his body and mind.

Those days could be called one of the darkest periods of Batman's life.

Bane had also made a name for himself through that battle, earning the title of Gotham's foremost spinal adjustment master.
