Pacific Ocean, Mariana Trench.
This was the deepest known trench on Earth, located near the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific Ocean.
At its deepest point, Challenger Deep, the water was over 11,000 meters deep. Even if Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on Earth, were inserted upside down into it, its peak would still be a long way from the surface.
Humanity had landed on the Moon, 380,000 kilometers away, several times, yet exploration of this trench, only a little over 10,000 meters deep, was practically nonexistent.
There was only one core reason: the water pressure at depths of 10,000 meters was too terrifying.
Under that kind of pressure, even a tank would instantly be crushed flat like a cookie. Other than specially designed deep-sea submersibles, any ordinary object sinking to a certain depth would be pulverized. Humans of flesh and blood had no chance of operating on the seafloor, no matter how thick their equipment was.
Even Atlanteans, who were born able to adapt to the deep-sea environment, did not dare approach these waters lightly.
Because this was Trench territory.
Not only were they incredibly numerous, but they were also ferocious, fearless of death, and never fought alone. Even Atlantis, the most powerful nation, did not dare provoke those beasts.
"Are you sure the Sacred Trident is here?"
The Hellfire Skin helicopter hovered above the sea. Mera leaned out through the cabin door, staring down at the churning waters below with open doubt in her voice.
She had agreed to help Du Mu and Arthur so she would not be sacrificed to the Trench, yet Du Mu and Arthur had turned around and brought her straight to Trench territory.
Were they worried she would not die fast enough?
"One hundred percent sure. It's deep on the seafloor below us."
