After Obito Uchiha had taken his seat, Murato Onizuka said, "I'll introduce myself first. Then, follow my example and introduce yourselves. Understood?"
"Understood!" The class answered in unison as soon as Onizuka finished speaking.
"Good. Let's begin." Murato Onizuka straightened his papers and said, "My name is Murato Onizuka. I'm 26 years old, and my dream is to become a Jonin. I like lots of things, and I dislike rainy days."
"Um, sensei! My name is Asuma Sarutobi. I'm five years old, and my dream is to protect Konoha! I like Kurenai! I don't dislike anything in particular yet." The moment Onizuka finished speaking, Asuma Sarutobi, who was sitting at the back, called out loudly. Then he looked at Kurenai Yuhi, who was sitting nearby, with a particularly smug expression.
Kurenai turned her head away, unimpressed by his brazen confession.
The introductions didn't stop there. They continued in an orderly fashion.
"Sensei! My name is Genma Shiranui! I'm five years old, and my dream is to become Hokage. I don't have anything I particularly like yet! I hate eating pickled fish."
"Sensei!..."
"My name is Obito Uchiha! My dream is to become Hokage, and then I'll make sure my goggles and Sharingan are carved into Kage Rock. I like..." Obito Uchiha's cheeks flushed as he stammered, glancing at Rin Nohara beside him.
Everyone watched Obito Uchiha fidget for ages without managing to say what he liked, then urged the next person to introduce himself.
"Kakashi Hatake. I don't want to say how old I am, I don't know what my dream is, and I don't want to tell you what I like or dislike."
"Aw, how could this happen? I thought we'd find out what Kakashi liked and disliked. Now I don't even know what to give him. This is such a headache." Some of the girls who admired Kakashi immediately lost heart.
"Uchiha Shisui. My dream is to bring peace to the Shinobi World. I like challenges. There are too many things I dislike to list."
"Shisui's dream really is unusual," some of the girls began to remark.
"Uchiha Shisui? The Uchiha Clan's prodigy." Murato Onizuka silently made a note of it.
"Good. You're dismissed!" Murato Onizuka said, then strode out of the classroom.
"Kakashi, come on. Let's have a real fight at the training ground!" Shisui pulled Kakashi out of the classroom and headed straight for the training ground.
At the Hokage Building, Hiruzen Sarutobi listened to the Chunin in front of him report through a haze of smoke. His eyes flickered a few times.
"Onizuka, thanks for all your hard work. You may go." Hiruzen Sarutobi put down his pipe and looked out the window.
"Yes, Lord Hokage."
After Murato Onizuka left, Hiruzen Sarutobi murmured to himself, "A dream like the First's? He's a good child who'll inherit the Will of Fire."
"Bang!" The office door was flung open, slamming hard against the wall.
Hiruzen Sarutobi turned to look at his old comrade and said calmly, "Danzō, shouldn't you be handling the aftermath of the war? What are you doing here?"
"Hiruzen, approve Kakashi Hatake and Uchiha Shisui joining Root." Shimura Danzō entered the office, leaning on his cane.
"Danzō! You've gone too far. You can forget about anyone from the Ninja Academy! Besides, Sakumo is still alive." Hiruzen Sarutobi set down his pipe and snapped angrily.
"Hiruzen, Sakumo has already put on the Hokage's short-sleeved uniform. If you still want to keep your position, then agree to my request!"
"That's enough, Danzō! Are you threatening me? Don't forget, I'm the Hokage!"
"Hmph! Hiruzen, you'll regret this!" Danzō shot a sinister glance at Hiruzen Sarutobi, seated in the Hokage's chair, then stormed out, slamming the door behind him.
At Training Ground 14, Kakashi held a wooden Kunai and dodged the Shuriken flying toward him with a few quick sidesteps.
The two figures clashed and broke apart at lightning speed, too fast for the naked eye to follow. They traded blows evenly, their Taijutsu nearly matched.
"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!" Shisui flipped backward onto a branch, swiftly formed Hand Seals, then breathed out an enormous fireball ten meters in diameter.
The fireball was like a meteor, streaking diagonally down from above toward Kakashi, who stood on the grass.
"Damn! How much chakra does he have?!" Kakashi's eyes widened in surprise, but his hands were already forming Hand Seals. He slapped the ground. "Earth Style: Earth Wall!"
A thick, towering dog-headed earthen wall burst from the ground, blocking the oncoming flames. The earth cracked and burst under the scorching fire, splitting into fissures before being burned to ash and scattered.
When the flames died down, only a small, smoking remnant of the wall remained to shield Kakashi.
"Kakashi, want another round?" Shisui curled his fingers into the Tiger Seal and teased him.
"If you didn't have that ridiculous amount of chakra, the outcome might've been different. I'll let you have this one. I want Yakiniku Q tonight." Kakashi emerged from behind the wall, smiling as he shrugged.
"Kakashi, if you want to make me pay, just say so!" Shisui complained. He'd taken Kakashi there before, and the outrageous prices had scared him off for good.
"A bet's a bet. Those were your words." Kakashi chuckled, looking like he'd already got his way.
"Next time I treat you, you're paying double!" Shisui grumbled.
"Sure, sure. See you tonight." Having gotten what he wanted, Kakashi vanished with a smile using the Body Flicker Technique.
After Kakashi left, Shisui opened his template. Sure enough, a skill had been unlocked.
Fire Release: Great Fire Annihilation (Unlocked)
"So battles really are how I unlock skills! If that's the case, I can rise to prominence quickly during the Third Shinobi World War!"
"For now, I should just develop steadily. If that person sets their sights on me, things could still get troublesome."
With that, Shisui got up and headed home. He took out his savings, planning to treat Kakashi to dinner that night. As a prodigy of the clan with an inheritance from his parents, Shisui was hardly short of money.
Yakiniku Q was owned by the Akimichi Clan, and it was already packed with customers.
"Over here! Shisui!" Kakashi poked his head out and looked toward the entrance, where Uchiha Shisui stood.
"You got here early, Kakashi." Shisui sat across from Kakashi and started ordering.
"Everything on this page and the next two pages, please. And bring us two bottles of sake."
"The Ninja Code says minors aren't allowed to drink," the server reminded them with a smile.
"Ah, sorry. Then just bring us two glasses of juice." Kakashi scratched his head. He'd always wanted to know if the drink his father drank tasted any good.
"You idiot! Hahaha." Shisui naturally couldn't pass up the chance to tease him.
While they waited for their food, two figures approached.
"Mind if we join you? Of course, this meal's on me!" Asuma Sarutobi said, thumping his chest.
Shisui glanced around and only then realized that every table in the restaurant was full. He didn't mind sharing a table, and with a sucker willing to pay, he was all for it. Kakashi didn't mind either. He was there to eat, so it didn't matter who paid.
"Sure, sure. I'll move over." Shisui gave up his seat and went to sit beside Kakashi. "What are you looking at? Scoot over."
Kakashi rolled his eyes and shifted over.
"Hello, I'm Kurenai Yuhi. I introduced myself in class today." Kurenai entered the private room. Her gaze unconsciously drifted toward Uchiha Shisui, and her face flushed a little.
Seeing this, Asuma Sarutobi felt as sour as if he'd swallowed a jar of vinegar. He's only a little more handsome than me, and a little more famous. What else does he have going for him?
"Kurenai, you can sit inside." Asuma Sarutobi said gallantly, though he looked so affected that Shisui could barely keep from laughing.
"Um, Asuma Sarutobi, we don't know each other that well yet. You should call me Kurenai Yuhi." Kurenai spoke to Asuma Sarutobi, her gaze secretly turning toward Uchiha Shisui. But when she saw him chatting away with Kakashi, a trace of disappointment flickered in her eyes.
Asuma Sarutobi's face stiffened, but he swallowed his embarrassment and sat down.
The meat was soon brought to the table. Looking at the mouthwatering food, everyone's appetite stirred.
"Let's eat!" the four of them said in unison.
Dinner ended pleasantly. Shisui said goodbye to everyone and walked alone toward the Uchiha Compound.
"Uchiha Shisui, I'm going to beat you!" Asuma Sarutobi caught up and declared.
"You've got spirit. I'll wait for you to challenge me in a match at school."
Uchiha Shisui glanced back as he spoke. During dinner, Kurenai Yuhi had added meat to his plate almost every time a batch finished cooking.
He understood what she meant. Children in the Naruto world tended to mature early. Before they even knew what love was, they often fell for whoever was good-looking.
Shisui wasn't going to waste his time on that. He had no interest in little kids, and with a dream as lofty as uniting the Shinobi World, he didn't have time to play house.
