Sphinx Street was a famously chaotic street in New Dar City.
The place was packed with all sorts of low-end bars, casinos, dance halls, pool halls, and the like.
With these establishments came plenty of street punks and gangs, so violent incidents occurred here almost every night.
For example, right now, the floor-to-ceiling window of a pool hall was smashed from within, and a battered, blood-covered figure came tumbling out.
Immediately afterward, a burly figure stepped out through the shattered window.
He stood nearly two meters tall. When his foot came down, it snapped a thick wooden window board lying on the ground. Clearly, he weighed a great deal, yet he was not fat. He was the broad, powerfully built type, and his physique alone was immensely intimidating.
Planting one foot on the rolling, miserable figure, the street's colorful lights illuminated Fierce Brother's face. His features were rugged and sharply defined, with large eyes and thick brows. At first glance, he looked somewhat vicious, but upon closer inspection, he seemed valiant and imposing.
Ignoring the street brawl still raging inside the pool hall behind him, Fierce Brother stopped the rolling man with one foot, then promptly sat his ass down on the unlucky fellow.
He nearly crushed another two mouthfuls of blood out of him.
Seeing the unlucky man beneath him roll his eyes back and faint, Fierce Brother paid no attention. He casually picked up a discarded newspaper from the ground and began reading it despite the stains on it.
<Sodis Rebel Army Crushed, The Empire's Westward Expansion Succeeds Once Again!> <The Imperial Capital Opens Another Unknown World-Crossing Gate. The Entire Vanguard Has Been Wiped Out. The gate is expected to be forcibly closed in three days.> <Vandir City Suffers Multiple Horrific Cannibalism Cases. They are suspected to be related to an uncontrolled World-Crossing Gate that suddenly opened here half a year ago.>
"This world really is getting more and more chaotic," Bane said, shaking his head with a sigh.
Bane was Fierce Brother. He was not a local, but someone who had inexplicably transmigrated into this world two weeks ago.
Whenever he thought back on what had happened, he felt utterly stifled.
In his original world, he had been living it up with his handsome face, humorous personality, and a few special talents.
Not long ago, he had even won over his young, wealthy, gorgeous landlord lady with the great figure.
He had finally gotten the chance to move into the landlord lady's big villa rent-free, and Bane had already planned out his future. Yet when he opened his eyes from the landlord lady's embrace, which was as flat as an E-cup, he had become a fierce brother roaming the streets.
Though Fierce Brother's physical condition was extremely satisfying, who could accept suddenly falling from a grand villa to scraping by on the streets?
That was why he felt his transmigration had not gone very well.
Fortunately, Bane's mental fortitude was fairly strong, and he had more or less accepted reality by now.
The original owner of this muscular body seemed to have died in a chaotic street fight. There was still a scar behind his ear that had not fully healed.
The original owner had not been an ordinary person, but one of the special individuals with abilities. He had been registered by the Imperial Special Abilities Administration as an "E-rank" ability user!
His ability was physical strength.
Put simply, his physical qualities far surpassed those of ordinary people. His strength, muscle density, bone strength, and everything else were beyond normal human standards.
That was right. Fierce Brother was genuinely gifted!
Even so, he was only E-rank. The Empire had endured for a thousand years, and E-rank ability users who had appeared during that time were countless. They were not everywhere, but one could always find several after crossing a couple of streets. They were nothing rare. Especially in recent years, World-Crossing Gates had begun appearing randomly across the world without any explanation, bringing unimaginable changes to The Empire. All sorts of strange powers from other worlds had begun impacting and changing the old order!
So even though Fierce Brother was an ability user, he was not anyone particularly formidable. This ordinary ability had merely earned him the position of a gang leader on the streets.
"Sure enough, my transmigration really hasn't gone well," Bane muttered self-mockingly as the thought crossed his mind.
Over the short ten-odd minutes, the chaos in the pool hall behind him gradually subsided.
Soon, a lackey who was not particularly strong but carried a vicious air emerged from inside with a group of thugs. He was dragging a man who had been beaten beyond recognition and was covered in blood.
"Boss, we got the debt back."
As he reported, a sharp-eyed lackey handed over a paper bag full of cash.
Bane took it casually without counting it, then looked back at the wrecked pool hall, where people lay sprawled all over the floor.
Unbothered by the sight, Bane casually patted the dragged man on the head and sneered. "On Sphinx Street, no one gets to owe me money. Did you think finding a bunch of trash from who-knows-where gave you the right to tell me you weren't paying?"
After a moment, he received no response, which made Bane feel somewhat embarrassed.
He was just about to teach the guy another lesson when he seemed to remember something. Reaching beneath the man's nose, he waited a moment before cursing in annoyance, "I told you idiots to go easy on him! Couldn't you hear me? You beat him to death outright! If word gets out, people will think I'm some cold-blooded bastard who kills without blinking!"
The lackeys seemed surprised as well, but after a moment, someone said indifferently, "Boss, this is New Dar. Nobody cares if one or two people die."
"That was before. The newspaper said The Empire has already crushed the Sodis Rebel Army, and the Westward Expansion has achieved another success. The Empire will definitely continue establishing itself on the front lines next. New Dar will no longer be the front line—it'll become a supply station for it. Order will inevitably be rebuilt here, and there won't be such a lax environment for gangsters like us anymore," Bane said, shaking his head.
But after saying that, he found it boring. These people might not understand even if he explained.
So he did not elaborate further. He pulled out two bundles of cash from the paper bag, picked a lackey he found somewhat unpleasant, and said, "This life goes on your head. Here's twenty thousand. Take it and run. If it's not enough, go collect some from the streets yourself. Come back after things blow over."
Running away to lie low was a common occurrence for New Dar's street punks. After all, the local investigation bureau was nothing special. If a case went ten days or half a month without progress, no one would bother with it anymore. They could simply return afterward.
For street brawls like this, it was even questionable whether anyone would report them at all. The lackey might end up getting twenty thousand for nothing.
Thus, the lackey happily accepted the money. "No problem, Boss."
But he quickly came to his senses and asked in confusion, "But Boss, what do you mean by going out on the streets to collect more if it's not enough?"
"Figure it out yourself." Bane put away the paper bag, rose to his feet, and answered casually.
He had already decided not to keep hanging around the streets. Being a gangster had no future. He had only gone with the flow these past two weeks in order to familiarize himself with the world and make some money. Now, it was time to find himself a more promising path.
After dismissing the lackeys to go entertain themselves, Bane left the street and headed toward his home.
That was right. As one of the leaders of a gang, he did have a home of his own in New Dar City.
But he planned to sell the house and leave this hellhole behind to start over. After all, too many people here knew he was involved with gangs. Wherever he went, someone might call him "Boss," or a couple of enemies might pop out and try to fight him to the death. How was he supposed to start a new life under those circumstances?
As Bane thought about these matters, he entered his apartment building. Just as he turned the corner to head upstairs, an inexplicable wave of energy suddenly spread from his chest. It made his heart pound, while he also felt his strength rapidly draining away.
Before Bane could figure out what was happening, a gate of void shimmering with multicolored light suddenly appeared in front of him.
Instinctively, Bane cried out, "A World-Crossing Gate!?"
Hello, hello, everyone! After so many days, I've finally started a new book today.
This is my first time writing on Qidian, so from that perspective, I'm a complete newcomer. I hope all the esteemed Qidian readers will take good care of me. If there are any issues, please feel free to point them out, and I will humbly accept your advice.
Before this, though, I had published books on two other platforms. I used the pen name Zippo on one and Oranges and the Sea, the same one as this time, on the other. Many longtime readers have continued supporting me, and I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your support over the years!
With this new book's release, I do not dare claim that my writing is excellent or my skills are outstanding. That is not for me to decide; everyone has their own tastes. But readers who have supported me before should have no doubts about my character.
I've written tens of millions of words across more than ten books, and I always see things through from beginning to end. So everyone can rest assured and follow me!
Last but not least, I hope everyone will support me. My deepest thanks!
