Dugu Yan is Dugu Bo's only granddaughter and inherits the Jade Phosphorous Serpent lineage's poisonous Martial Soul. Its venom also corrodes its wielder, giving her distinctive purple hair and green eyes. Medicinal baths strengthen her body from childhood, making her willing to attempt a third ring slightly beyond the usual optimal age of 1,760 years 12 13.

In the Star Dou Great Forest, Lu Yu rescues her from a Nine-Section Jade Viper using his Heaven-Defying Seal. She asks him to guard her ring absorption and subsequently arranges an escort out of the forest in exchange for a storage Soul Tool.
