Background / History

The Northwest was formerly controlled by the Zhao Family. Its harsh environment, sparse population, weak agriculture, and decades of Zhao misrule left the region economically and industrially devastated; rebellions spread as the Zhao Family increased taxes after military defeats. 336 403 448

Zhou Yan’s forces seized Western Capital and dismantled most of the Zhao Family’s military power. He then moved to secure the remaining territory, treating the capture of Azure Dragon Pass as essential to holding the Northwest permanently. 374 386

Following the Zhao Family’s collapse, Zhou Yan consolidated local factions through military deterrence, material benefits, and the Blood Wolf Riders’ inclusion of youths from Northwest forces. Remaining Zhao loyalists were rooted out, and the region gradually stabilized. 390 437

The ancient-demon crisis further changed the Northwest’s fortunes. After the demons were dealt with, the Weihei River calmed, Ulan Mountain revived, and the desert Beyond the Pass began to recede. Local forces subsequently pledged allegiance to Zhou Yan in large numbers. 437

Azure Dragon Pass is the Northwest’s decisive strategic gateway, linking the region to the Central Plains. It was historically the major defense against northwestern barbarian invasions and is described as both the Northwest’s vulnerable “throat” and its greatest shield. 386 399

The Northwest Army is built around battle-hardened troops, firearms, artillery, Dao Soldiers, and specialized formations. Before the wider wars, Zhou Yan commanded nearly 100,000 soldiers, including a Field Army of more than 70,000 veterans. 399

Through the Yongzhou Cauldron, Zhou Yan detected sixteen Demonic Qi Passages within the Northwest: eleven small, four medium, and one large. These locations could become invasion routes for demonic-energy creatures and the Devil Race. 557
