Ch. 81The Ghost Bride
Plot points and events
- Zhou Yan suspects the Dong Family’s deaths were deliberate and that many townspeople—or possibly the mayor—are concealing what happened. Yue Feng checks the convoy’s food and water while the group prepares for a powerful vengeful ghost.
- Zhou Yan recommends gathering together, lighting fires, and using roosters and black dogs as protection. Yue Yuna adds an important precaution: she has the convoy surrender and lock away its weapons so nobody can turn on the others if caught in an illusion.
- Zhou Yan’s Corpse Crows detect a ghostly bridal procession approaching Tang Family Town. The six sedan bearers appear to be the people the Ghost Bride killed and enslaved. The convoy hears wedding music and begins falling under the ghost’s influence, but Yue Feng’s shout briefly restores order.
- A vision of the procession lures people toward it. Zhou Yan sends out his Yaksha, which devours one bearer and clashes with the Ghost Bride. His Escape Corpse attacks the sedan, but the bride traps it inside and nearly crushes it.
- Yingdian joins the fight, cutting down one bearer with her sword. Yaksha consumes the remaining bearers, but the Ghost Bride’s sedan—revealed as a powerful yin artifact—sucks Yaksha inside and weakens it. The artifact explains how the bride concealed her yin energy and rapidly gained the strength of a Qi-Inducing Realm vicious ghost.
- Zhou Yan orders the convoy to kill the roosters and black dogs, then charges the sedan with their blood and a Lightning-Struck Peach Wood Sword. Yingdian keeps the bride occupied, but the chapter ends as Zhou Yan throws the jars of blood onto the sedan and the Ghost Bride screams.
Character developments and interactions
- Zhou Yan takes charge of the supernatural response, though his advice is partly based on uncertain knowledge. He recognizes his mistakes—especially the danger of weapons in an illusion—and adapts quickly. He fights through both his Yaksha and Escape Corpse.
- Yue Yuna proves calm, practical, and decisive. She improves Zhou Yan’s defensive plan, commands the convoy effectively, and acts immediately when he asks for blood.
- Ruyu questions Zhou Yan’s unfamiliar folk saying and remains wary, but her growing respect for him keeps her from openly rebuking him.
- Yue Feng focuses on maintaining order and protecting the convoy, successfully snapping people out of the ghost’s influence with a forceful command.
- Yingdian proves effective in close combat, using her sword to destroy a bearer and pressure the sedan. Zhou Yan’s supernatural allies also fight alongside her, though Yaksha is ultimately drawn into the artifact.
Significant themes
- Fear, secrecy, and communal complicity: The town’s silence suggests the tragedy may involve more than one culprit.
- Preparation and leadership under pressure: Collective discipline and Yue Yuna’s practical decisions help the convoy resist panic and illusion.
- The limits of knowledge and power: Zhou Yan’s precautions are imperfect, and even strong allies are vulnerable to the Ghost Bride’s artifact.
- The cost of vengeance: The bride’s power is formidable, while the dead she enslaves remain trapped in her revenge.
