Dean and Sam waited in the living room downstairs. They could faintly hear muffled sobbing and whispers from upstairs, and both of them relaxed halfway. It seemed they could bring Jesse back in the most peaceful way possible.

Jesse was far too important.

His adoptive parents, Mark and Katherine Turner, were clearly heartbroken, but they also seemed to understand that Jesse's departure was inevitable.

About twenty minutes passed, yet Jesse still had not come downstairs.

Sam sensed that something was wrong. He exchanged a look with Dean, and the two hurried upstairs together.

His adoptive parents were grieving in the living room, while Jesse's bedroom door stood slightly ajar. The two quickly went inside, but the room was empty. The bed was neatly made, and the window was tightly shut.

Only a note lay on Jesse's desk, held down by a paperweight.

Sam picked up the note. The child's handwriting was still somewhat immature, but neat:

"To Dad, Mom, and Sam and Dean:

I'm sorry, I can't say goodbye in person. If I do, I'll cry too hard to leave.

Thank you for loving me and protecting me. I know I'm different, and that might put you in danger. That bad demon found me, and other people might come looking too.

I'm leaving to protect you. Please don't look for me. I'll be okay.

I love you all.

—Jesse"

Beside the note was his favorite little Iron Man figurine, apparently left behind as something for his adoptive parents to remember him by.

"He's gone," Sam murmured, his heart filled with mixed emotions.

He hoped Jesse could have a peaceful life. He understood that feeling all too well, because he had once been in college with a lovely girlfriend.

But when demons set their sights on him, everything changed.
