"Stalling for time?" Dean whipped around to glare at the basilisk. "For whom? The ogres? Or something else?"
The basilisk did not answer.
It suddenly opened its mouth—not to attack, but to unleash a piercing screech beyond the limits of human hearing.
The sound not only split every hunter's head with pain; more importantly—
"It's calling something!" Sam shouted, covering his ears.
From the direction of the highway came heavy footsteps and deep roars. The footsteps were chaotic—there were definitely more than one.
Ogres. At least seventy or eighty of them, emerging from the darkness and charging toward the town.
The basilisk had not been acting alone. It was working with the ogres—or, at the very least, they were commanded by the same will.
"Damn it, we got played!" Dean spat, raising his reloaded shotgun. "Liz, get the wounded back! Everyone else, get ready to fight!"
Battle was about to erupt.
Amid the chaos, the basilisk broke free from the telekinetic cage. But instead of joining the fight, it swiftly retreated into the shadows and vanished into the night. Its job of delaying them was complete.
Dean and Sam had no time to pursue it, because the ogre horde was already upon them.
These monsters, over eight feet tall with skin as rough as stone, charged forward roaring, wielding crude clubs and rocks.
"Open fire!"
Gunfire exploded across the town's night sky.
Half an hour later, after clearing out the ogre horde, the hunter team continued south along the highway.
According to Internet Addiction's tracking, the basilisk and the remaining ogres were all heading in the same direction: an area called Elwin Town.
Along the way, they came upon an even stranger scene.
Five ogre corpses lay scattered across a clearing beside the highway.
They had not been killed by
