Wu Heng patiently listened as Sam finished speaking. Only after his voice faded did he give a slight nod.

He did not rush to refute him or explain himself. He simply stood there quietly, waiting until Sam's final word had scattered on the wind before slowly speaking.

His tone remained calm, as though answering a student's question in class.

"Sam, you're right. They're fighting desperately to survive too. But let me ask you a question. Think carefully before you answer." He paused, his gaze falling on Sam's face. "There were humans in those two worlds to begin with. You say those angels and demons have the right to survive—then what about those humans? Where do you think they went?"

Sam froze. So did Dean.

They had never considered that question.

That dream—the Black Shadow had only shown them angels and demons slaughtering each other. It had shown them nothing of humans.

So they had subconsciously assumed there had never been humans in those two worlds, only angels and demons destroying one another.

Now, Wu Heng's single question—"What about the humans?"—was like an awl piercing through that thin layer of understanding.

If those worlds had once held humans, then where had they gone?

Had the angels protected them? Had the demons devoured them? Or had they been crushed to dust amid the war between the two?

Had they ever knelt amid ruins and prayed to the angels?

Had they ever been dragged into the darkness by demons and used as blood food?

Sam's lips trembled. Not from fear, but because he realized his mind was completely blank.

He knew nothing.

He had come running to question Wu Heng based on nothing but a dream, nothing but a few scenes the Black Shadow had shown him.
