Ch. 501Shadow Guards
Chapter Summary
Plot and key events
- Xu Yang breaks through to the seventh layer of the Blood Prison Heart Saber Scripture, forming an invisible Heart Saber and greatly strengthening his mental power, body, and control over his abilities. He can now alter his aura and Astral Essence’s appearance through thought, though maintaining the disguise is taxing.
- After consolidating his gains, he leaves seclusion and is assigned to guard Node Four of the Demon-Sealing Grand Formation. There he joins Wang Xu and works under Teacher Kong Ning.
- Kong Ning warns Xu Yang to obey her, apparently resenting his connection to the Kong Family’s dead relatives, Lin Jingyu and Li Changchun. Xu Yang stays outwardly restrained rather than escalating the confrontation.
- Han Qianlin learns of Xu Yang’s assignment and plots to kill him while making the attack appear to be a demonic assault on the formation. The Han Family’s masked Shadow Guards are sent to Node Four after a delay, with orders to draw out Xu Yang’s hidden protector if possible.
- Over two months, Xu Yang settles into the guard rotation and continues training. He perfects the Vajra Great Hand Seal and reaches major mastery in the Frenzied War Four Symbols Art, which can double his physical strength.
- The chapter ends as the Shadow Guards attack. Two masked Heavenly Origin Ninth Layer fighters engage Kong Ning and quickly overpower her. The other guards prepare to defend her, while Xu Yang strikes but quietly moves behind his companions.
Character development and interactions
- Xu Yang emerges from cultivation markedly more powerful and self-assured. He shows restraint when Kong Ning provokes him, but his instinctive detection of the approaching attackers reveals his heightened awareness.
- Kong Ning is introduced as proud, abrasive, and prejudiced toward Xu Yang; despite her authority, she is now in grave danger from the coordinated assault.
- Wang Xu serves as Xu Yang’s fellow guard and warns him about Kong Ning’s temperament. Liu Ze, the senior student on duty, takes charge when the attack begins.
- Han Qianlin’s plan reveals the Han Family’s willingness to use covert violence and sacrifice the appearance of innocents to conceal its involvement. The Shadow Guards follow a strict plan: keep the attack brief, kill Xu Yang, and expose his protector if possible.
Significant themes
- Power and control: Xu Yang’s breakthrough enhances not only his strength but also his ability to control his body, techniques, and outward appearance.
- Political intrigue and plausible deniability: The Han Family disguises a targeted assassination as an attack on a vital formation node.
- Restraint versus hostility: Xu Yang refuses to react impulsively to Kong Ning’s insult, while the Han Family’s concealed aggression drives the chapter’s conflict.
- Training under threat: Xu Yang’s quiet progress contrasts with the sudden danger that interrupts the guards’ seemingly comfortable routine.
