Appearance
Yamamoto is an elderly yet heavily built man. When preparing to fight, he removes his upper garments, revealing a scar-covered, muscular torso wreathed in flames during Zanpakuto release 273 401.
- White beard and eyebrows; they return to snow-white after the strain of Tencheng Shiro's rebellion 371.
- Carries an ancient tachi, Ryūjin Jakka.
- Has a restored left arm after it was severed in battle with Ichiro 273 289.
Personality
Yamamoto is stern, prideful, and uncompromising when the safety or authority of the Gotei 13 is at stake. He does not automatically obey Central 46, instead following rules he considers acceptable and acting decisively when they conflict with his own principles 166.
Despite his old-fashioned temperament, he recognizes talent and places considerable trust in Ichiro, protecting him, commissioning sensitive assignments, and relying on his research against threats such as Zero Division and the Wandenreich 39 196 244 245. He also shows a gentler side as Yamamoto Senhao's adoptive father and guardian 292.
Abilities & Skills
Reiatsu
Yamamoto possesses overwhelming spiritual pressure and is regarded as the strongest Soul Reaper of the past thousand years 201.
- His Reiatsu eruption can make the entire Seireitei tremble 201.
- His raw power remains formidable even when opponents disrupt his Reiryoku or prevent him from using Shikai and Bankai 78.
- He has been described as a Soul Reaper whose strength is fundamentally his own rather than dependent solely on Kido or Zanpakuto abilities 305.
Mastery of the Four Soul Reaper Arts
Yamamoto is a master of Zanpakuto combat, Hakuda, Shunpo, and Kido.
- Defeated Abe no Seimei's Adjuchas and Twelve Divine Generals without releasing Shikai or Bankai 78.
- His swordsmanship defeated Unohana in her prime; she described him as needing only “one sword” against her countless styles 117.
- His Shunpo and unarmed combat are strong enough that he remains the strongest even without Ryūjin Jakka's special abilities 87.
- He can use modern Kido, though his strength does not stem from Kido specialization 305.
Ryūjin Jakka
Ryūjin Jakka is Yamamoto's fire-type Zanpakuto, whose flames are among the most destructive forces in Soul Society.
- Shikai release: “Reduce all creation to ash, Ryūjin Jakka!” 202
- Its flames can produce towering pillars of fire and scorching waves capable of threatening captain-class opponents 201 202.
- Yamamoto's original Ryūjin Jakka vastly surpasses imitations produced by Enrakyoten 202 272.
- He can burn away Reishi attacks, including Holy Annihilation Bullets, with a casual swing 272.
Zanka no Tachi
Yamamoto's Bankai is an exceptionally destructive form of Ryūjin Jakka.
- Simply maintaining its activation can gradually evaporate all water in Soul Society 63 201.
- Yamamoto trained to limit its output to less than half its maximum power, increasing its precision and focused destructive force while reducing collateral damage 272.
- East: Rising Sun Blade — concentrates its heat into the blade; it instantly reduced Ichiro to ashes when it struck him directly 273.
- West: Sun Garment of the Prison — surrounds Yamamoto in a wall of concentrated flames that incinerates incoming attacks 272.
- By the Quincy war, he could activate Zanka no Tachi without radiating noticeable heat into the environment, indicating far greater control over its power 401.
History
Yamamoto founded the Gotei 13 and became its Head Captain, establishing himself as the central military authority of Soul Society 308. During the rebellion associated with Kuchiki Koga, he gathered with Shunsui, Unohana, Shihoin Seigen, and Kuchiki Ginrei outside the rebel headquarters. He regarded the rebellion as manageable unless it involved exceptional Gotei 13 captains 28.
He recognized Tenshin Ichiro's potential early, describing him as a genius and revealing that Unohana was grooming him as Squad 4's future captain 28. Yamamoto later approved measures to erase Ichiro's intelligence records, protect him secretly, grant him access to Kido up to No. 90, and support his healing-type Zanpakuto production 39.
When Abe no Seimei attacked Soul Society with Hollows, Divine Generals, and a talisman intended to disrupt his Reiryoku, Yamamoto defeated the summoned forces through mastery of the four arts. He subsequently defeated Abe himself with little concern for the nobles' attempts to reclaim the Divine Generals' bodies 78 81.
As threats from Zero Division, Kuchiki Koga, and the Wandenreich intensified, Yamamoto increasingly relied on Ichiro's preparation. He requested countermeasures against Zero Division, secretly ordered Koga's complete sealing rather than execution, and assigned Ichiro to investigate the Wandenreich and devise a response to the Bankai-stealing Cross Medallion 196 244 245.
A mysterious Quincy later seriously wounded Yamamoto with a Spirit-Devouring Bullet, leaving his wound resistant to ordinary Kaido. Ichiro ultimately treated him and restored his severed arm, though Yamamoto refused Ichiro's proposed enhancements to it 274 289.
After adopting Soul King candidate Yamamoto Senhao, he personally protected and trained the boy while Ichiro monitored Senhao's condition 292. Following Tencheng Shiro's rebellion and the apparent deaths of Ichiro and Kuchiki Ginrei, Yamamoto relinquished operational command to Shunsui, citing his own failure to recognize the danger sooner 371.
After the final conflict restored the world's rules, Yamamoto formally stepped down as Head Captain and accepted Shunsui as his successor 410.
