The ground began to shake. The young wizards retreated again and again. Inside the confinement circle, square blocks of earth in front of the Hundred-Eyed Demons rose up from the grass, stacking into scattered high walls, low walls, even trellises, while trenches were dug out...

Allen had temporarily simulated his practical class field into terrain one might encounter in real combat, instantly filling the area with obstacles of all shapes. The arms of the three Hundred-Eyed Demons were frantically tearing apart everything around them, making the field look even more chaotic.

Allen held the teaching wand sideways, pointing its tip forward. In an instant, five missiles formed from magical energy shot from the tip of the wand.

The missiles flew out with specks of blue light, like streaking Shooting Stars, tracing five curves through the air as they hurtled toward the three Hundred-Eyed Demons.

Although Allen had merely cast the spell casually, and the wand tip had not been aimed at the demons at all before he did so, the five Magic Missiles seemed to possess minds of their own. They automatically split into three routes in midair. Three of them soared high, adjusted their trajectories, passed accurately through the gaps in the railings, and struck the Hundred-Eyed Demons. The other two each curved away, one to the left and one upward; one arced around the edge of a high wall and hit one demon's arm, while the other reached its position from above, suddenly changed course, and smashed straight down onto the Hundred-Eyed Demon that had fallen into a trench and had yet to struggle free.
