Allen intended to use the same trick again, firing Petrificus Totalus at the snakes and the book pillar. However, before the petrifying rays could reach them, they were melted away and neutralized by the Strange Snake's heat rays.
The unicorns' pained neighs, Gaia's heartbroken sobs, Gailis's furious roars... These sounds and scenes were etched deep into Allen's memory. He was frantic. What could he possibly do?
At that critical moment, Queen Vina leaped before everyone. With eyes full of longing, she gazed tenderly at Gailis and Gaia. As though he had guessed what she intended, Gailis shouted, "Vina, don't!"
Vina bent her left foreleg and lowered her beautiful head. A round white glow radiated from the horn on her forehead. The halo continuously expanded, forming a shield of light before all the unicorns. The flying snakes' heat rays struck the shield and rebounded straight back. The snake pillar itself burst into flames!
The blaze grew fiercer and fiercer. Some snakes flew out wreathed in flames, only to be struck by Allen's petrifying Charms; some writhed painfully in the fire; others swiftly burrowed back into the sand and fled.
Fewer and fewer snakes flew out, and the flames gradually died away. The sandy pit where the snake pillar had stood was pitch-black.
Queen Vina collapsed limply to the ground. Gailis immediately leaped to her side and painfully touched his head against Vina's. Gaia fell to her knees beside Queen Vina, weeping and trembling. The fourteen unicorns who had survived the battle bent their forelegs in tribute to Queen Vina, who had turned her life force into a shield of light and saved them all.
The dead were gone, while the living had to carry on. Vina could never be brought back, but Allen and the others still had to move forward.
