Ch. 621Friend

Allen explained his past actions to Helga Hufflepuff and asked for materials to help him and Rowena Ravenclaw research the Nether Scroll. He agreed to duel Godric Gryffindor carefully, and Hufflepuff arranged to set up the match.

  • Allen told Hufflepuff why he had been unable to save Helena and asked her to support his research with Rowena.
  • Hufflepuff agreed to send the materials Allen needed but refused to join the Nether Scroll research.
  • Hufflepuff asked Allen to duel Godric, who had become a Giant Squid because of his family’s blood curse and wanted to confront the man he blamed for Rowena and Helena’s deaths.
  • Allen agreed to duel Godric only when he could control his strength and ensure Godric’s safety.
  • Hufflepuff offered Allen the Ioun Stone from her Chamber of Secrets, and they agreed she would arrange the duel and notify Ravenclaw by letter.
  • Allen listed the materials he and Ravenclaw needed, then returned to their secret laboratory with dinner from Hufflepuff.

Ch. 622The Square Scarf

Allen prepared to meet Gryffindor while Ravenclaw stayed behind to watch through shadow ravens. At the Black Lake, Gryffindor recognized Ravenclaw’s handkerchief and learned that Allen had come from a thousand years in the future, leaving him furious that Ravenclaw would have to wait for him.

  • Ravenclaw infused a Mithril staff with shadows from the Obscuruses and sent three shadow ravens with Allen to observe his duel with Gryffindor.
  • Allen met Hufflepuff at the Black Lake, where she fed seafood to Gryffindor in his Giant Squid form.
  • Gryffindor returned to human form, forgot where he was, then remembered Allen and charged at him when Hufflepuff mentioned the duel.
  • Gryffindor stopped attacking after noticing the blue handkerchief around Allen’s neck, and Allen confirmed that Ravenclaw was alive.
  • Allen explained that a Time-Turner had sent him from a thousand years in the future, and Gryffindor became angry that Ravenclaw would have to wait for him.

Ch. 623Handover

Gryffindor questioned Allen about Hogwarts and, after hearing about its decline, gave him his founder authority to support reforming the school. Allen and Gryffindor then prepared to begin their honor duel, with Hufflepuff serving as judge.

  • Hufflepuff calmed Gryffindor, who accepted that Ravenclaw had survived into Allen's era and insisted on completing their duel.
  • Gryffindor asked Allen about Hogwarts, and Allen described the school’s problems and his plans to reform its curriculum.
  • Gryffindor condemned the restrictions on students’ learning, and Allen explained the social and political forces behind them.
  • Gryffindor gave Allen his quarter of founder authority and urged him to manage Hogwarts and restore its purpose.
  • Hufflepuff promised to guard Hogwarts and eventually transfer her founder authority to Ravenclaw.
  • Gryffindor made Hufflepuff the judge and began the duel with Allen as a trial of his fitness for the responsibility.

Ch. 624Duel from a Thousand Years Ago

Allen and Godric Gryffindor fought a deadly duel beside the Black Lake, each using powerful magic and summoned creatures. Allen’s Death Knights intercepted Gryffindor’s griffins while a Styx Memory-Stealing Demon attacked Gryffindor, and the battle remained unresolved as a wounded griffin fell from the sky.

  • Gryffindor opened the duel with a powerful multicolored spell, but Allen caught its lightning and hurled it back, then protected himself with a Shadow Shield.
  • Gryffindor’s negative energy ray strengthened Allen’s shield, and Allen interrupted Gryffindor’s Fiendfyre before striking him with a life-draining spell.
  • Gryffindor summoned two griffins, while Allen summoned three Death Knights and a Styx Memory-Stealing Demon to attack and defend against them.
  • Gryffindor fought the demon with a red Magic Lightsaber, cut its scimitar in two, and forced it to retreat after Allen’s Expelliarmus disrupted his attack.
  • A Death Knight pierced one griffin’s wing, and the wounded creature began falling from the sky.

Ch. 625Goodbye, Kid

After defeating Gryffindor in the duel, Allen learned that the Blood Curse would eventually cost Gryffindor his consciousness and life, and Gryffindor asked only for wine before returning to the Black Lake as a giant squid. Allen then accompanied Hufflepuff toward Ravenclaw’s meeting place, where he stopped in a daze.

  • Hufflepuff treated Gryffindor’s injured Griffin, and Gryffindor admitted defeat to spare his pets further harm.
  • Allen offered to study Gryffindor’s Blood Curse, but Gryffindor explained that there was not enough time to find the Nether Scrolls and break it before he died.
  • Gryffindor asked Allen to bring him wine, then transformed into a giant squid and disappeared into the Black Lake.
  • Ravenclaw sent Allen a message through a shadow Three-Eyed Raven, and Hufflepuff agreed to go with him to their old campsite.
  • Allen and Hufflepuff walked through the rough path while talking, until Allen stopped and stared ahead without responding.

Ch. 626A Pear Tree Blooms, Two Begonias Are Plucked

Allen visited Rowena Ravenclaw and found her reading while playing in magically controlled water, but Helga Hufflepuff caught her and Allen with a feather duster. Afterward, Rowena remained angry with Allen and refused to let him share her bed.

  • Allen arrived and stared at Rowena Ravenclaw as she read on the lawn beneath a stream of water.
  • Helga Hufflepuff saw Rowena and rushed over with a feather duster, scolding and swatting her for playing in the water at night.
  • Allen tried to intervene, but Helga accused him of wanting a daughter and swatted him too.
  • In Rowena's bedroom, Allen tried to climb onto her bed, but Rowena kicked him and told him not to touch her.

Ch. 627The Archmage's Staff

Allen and Ravenclaw used a summoned devil and a Dementor to forge a bone-wrapped Mithril staff, while Ravenclaw revealed that the devil Amon had been handed over through an arrangement with his master Baal. The chapter left Amon trapped and bleeding as Ravenclaw explained how Baal had become a devil archduke.

  • Allen sealed the archway and prepared a summoning ritual at the blood pool while Ravenclaw watched.
  • Allen summoned Amon, a Pit Fiend general, and restrained him inside a reinforced binding circle.
  • Allen used the shadow-eroded Mithril staff to destroy a Dementor, and Ravenclaw extracted its spine.
  • Allen and Ravenclaw carved runes into the Dementor's spine and wrapped it around the staff.
  • Allen restrained Amon and drained his corrosive blood into a ceramic vat.
  • Ravenclaw told Amon that Baal had arranged their cooperation and explained how Baal had risen to become a devil archduke.

Ch. 628Soul

Allen and Ravenclaw completed a staff built from a Dementor’s bones, devil bones, a soul gem, and Nether Scroll runes. Allen tested its soul-absorbing power on the sinners in the room, leaving their souls stored inside the staff’s Crystal Ball.

  • Allen captured a Pit Fiend’s soul in a gem, while he and Ravenclaw harvested bones from another devil.
  • Allen and Ravenclaw assembled the staff, bound it with their blood, and immersed it in the blood pool to complete it.
  • Allen examined the staff’s abilities, including absorbing souls, disrupting magic, and firing tracking force missiles.
  • Ravenclaw killed the sinners in the room with a spell that drained their bodies dry.
  • Allen activated the staff and drew the sinners’ souls into its Crystal Ball.

Ch. 629Hand of Vecna

Allen and Rowena Ravenclaw prepared for their coming separation, with Allen asking her to gather rare magical plant seeds and help create two ruins tied to the Hand of Vecna. Ravenclaw then revealed that Allen's final time-travel mission would require him to absorb the souls of innocent Muggles, leaving him to face the moral cost.

  • Ravenclaw returned with Allen to her Hogwarts secret chamber and offered him anything from her collection before their separation.
  • Allen asked Ravenclaw to collect seeds of magical plants that had vanished or become rare in his era, and promised to bring her back with the Resurrection Stone.
  • Allen examined the cursed Hand of Vecna, and Ravenclaw explained its powers, dangers, and the need to pair it with the Eye of Vecna for its full strength.
  • Allen asked Ravenclaw to build two similar ruins in the future, one to hold the Hand of Vecna and forged information, and another to contain a modified human heart.
  • Ravenclaw told Allen that his final time transition involved a prophecy about three kings, three wars, and three invasions, and asked whether he could bear absorbing innocent Muggles' souls.

Ch. 630Three Kings

King Edward lay dying in England and prophesied that enemies would seize his kingdom after his death. William of Normandy and Harald III the Ruthless both prepared for the chance to claim England, leaving the succession unresolved.

  • Edward briefly regained awareness and warned Harold Godwinson that war and the Devil’s flames would engulf the kingdom within a year and a day of his death.
  • William, Duke of Normandy, demonstrated his knights’ cavalry training and ordered a red-haired subordinate to repeat the exercise after missing a cabbage-headed dummy.
  • Harald III the Ruthless recalled his campaigns and decided Edward’s illness offered a chance for Norway to reconquer England.
  • Harald beat a tax debtor, broke his leg when he tried to leave, and then returned to composing a poem about his victories.

Ch. 631The Coming of War

After Edward’s death, Harold Godwinson seized the English throne, while William of Normandy and Harald of Norway prepared invasions with help from Harold’s exiled brother Tostig. The chapter left Harold unaware of the threats approaching from north and south.

  • Edward died on January 5, 1066, and Harold used a claim about Edward’s deathbed wishes to win the noble council’s support and become king the following day.
  • Harold had earlier driven Tostig from Northumbria after Tostig’s oppressive rule caused unrest, and Tostig joined William to seek revenge and regain his lands.
  • Tostig traveled to Norway and persuaded Harald Hardrada to join him in an invasion of England, planned for late summer.
  • William prayed with Matilda and declared that his preparations would be complete by summer.
  • Harold spoke with Gyrth Godwinson in London, unaware that William and Harald were preparing to attack.

Ch. 6321066

After completing his journey through time, Allen arrived in Anglo-Saxon England and entered a village celebrating a wedding. He disguised his magic as an entertaining performance, learned that Harold was the new king, and grew curious about a villager who resisted his spell.

  • Allen said farewell to Rowena and Helga, then used Shadow Three-Eyed Ravens to locate a settlement in southern England.
  • Allen entered Crowhurst Village and found its people gathered for Judith and Tofi's wedding.
  • Allen cast a Confundus Charm on the villagers, who mistook him for a foreign entertainer and welcomed him inside.
  • Allen noticed that one villager resisted the charm and blocked his probing, so he decided to stay and investigate.
  • Allen gave Aethelwulf a gold coin and performed magical tricks that amazed the wedding guests.
  • Aethelwulf warned Allen that his performance could cause trouble, and villagers praised King Harold for driving Tostig north.

Ch. 633Wedding

Allen attended Judith and Tofi’s wedding and recognized a frightened boy as a nonhuman creature with an innate defense against mental magic. The celebration was interrupted when the armed Odda arrived and ordered the villagers to separate by gender, leaving the wedding under threat.

  • Allen recalled that Tostig Godwinson had fled to Scotland after Harold defeated his invasion force, and realized the event did not count as one of the three battles in Ravenclaw’s prophecy.
  • Judith and Tofi exchanged wedding vows and completed the village ceremony as their neighbors celebrated.
  • Allen noticed a frightened boy who had resisted his Confundus Charm and suspected the child had otherworldly blood and an innate mental defense.
  • Odda entered the wedding with a hound, and Allen secretly cast a Confundus Charm on him.
  • Odda interrupted the newlyweds, ordered the armed men to line up, and told the women to sit down.

Ch. 634Recruitment

Odda recruited men from Crowhurst Village for the militia as Allen learned England faced threats from both the Normans and the Vikings. After Odda chased down Leofric, Allen set out to follow the recruits toward the battlefield.

  • Odda ordered several men and young lads to join the militia, despite Aethelwulf protesting that famine was coming.
  • Allen learned that the Normans and Norwegians were preparing to threaten England, while King Harold focused on the Normans.
  • Odda's hound recoiled from Allen, and Allen's Confundus Charm made Odda forget his suspicions about the outsider.
  • A frightened little boy offered Allen his possessions and pleaded with him not to take away his family, and Allen gave him a snack instead.
  • Odda chased Leofric into the woods, found him hiding in a tree, and ordered him back to join the militia.

Ch. 635Merlin

Odda led Crowhurst’s conscripted militiamen toward the English king’s encampment as Merlin warned that a king crossing the sea would bring death to England. Meanwhile, Harald Hardrada and Tostig sailed into England with their Viking army, preparing to invade Yorkshire.

  • Odda and the conscripted militiamen swore the Mead Oath, then marched away from their families.
  • Merlin told Odda of his recurring vision of a king crossing the sea and England strewn with corpses, and Odda warned him to keep it secret.
  • Odda led his men south from Crowhurst Village while Allen sent ravens to follow the troops and fly north toward Yorkshire.
  • Harald Hardrada brought a force of thirty thousand Vikings, including berserkers, toward England and joined Tostig.
  • Harald recited his battle verses aboard his ship and declared that his army would fill England’s graveyards.

Ch. 636Waiting

Harold waited on the Isle of Wight for William’s invasion while William remained trapped in Normandy by unfavorable winds. As Harold began disbanding his army, Harald Hardrada’s Vikings entered the River Ouse, leaving northern England exposed.

  • Odda warned Leofric that the Normans could attack under cover of night while the militia remained undisciplined on the Isle of Wight.
  • William secured the Pope’s approval and a papal banner for his claim to England, but north winds kept his invasion fleet at Dives-sur-Mer.
  • Harold and Gyrth joked about William and their family as they watched the English defenses, unaware of the Viking threat.
  • Harald Hardrada sailed into the River Ouse with his Vikings while Harold continued waiting for William on the Isle of Wight.
  • Harold ordered his fleet and many soldiers home as their service and the harvest season drew to an end, leaving only militia and a few professionals behind.

Ch. 637Beach

Allen used the Netherese Mavin spell to unleash a devastating storm on William’s fleet as it crossed the English Channel, harvesting the souls of the soldiers who died. William lost hundreds of ships and thousands of men and retreated to Saint-Valery, where he waited and prayed for the winds to change.

  • William ordered his fleet of more than a thousand ships and fourteen thousand soldiers to sail for England despite the contrary wind.
  • Allen watched William’s fleet approach Dover and decided to use Mavin to alter the weather.
  • Allen conjured a vast storm and whirlpool that sank roughly a third of William’s ships, and he absorbed the souls of the soldiers killed in the sea.
  • William lost more than three hundred ships and several thousand men, then took shelter at Saint-Valery in France.
  • William prayed for a sign and watched the weather vane for the wind to change, while the delay and storm damage gave him a tremendous advantage.

Ch. 638Disappointment

Harold prepared to fight the Vikings invading from the north while the militia on the Isle of Wight learned they would have to remain on duty despite expecting to return home. Allen inspected the souls he had absorbed and spotted a strangely dressed man approaching in an advanced sailing boat.

  • After hearing that Tostig and Harald Hardrada had invaded, Harold ordered his forces to muster and march north.
  • The Isle of Wight militia celebrated reports that the Normans had been struck by a storm and would not cross the sea.
  • Odda received new orders and told Leofric, Tofi, and the other militiamen to take up their weapons again instead of returning home.
  • That night, Odda and the militiamen watched the sea and mourned their delayed return to their families and harvests.
  • Allen returned to the White Cliffs of Dover, checked the souls he had absorbed, and prepared to head to the battlefield.
  • Allen noticed a dreadlocked man in a captain's hat sailing toward the cliffs in a boat with technology far beyond the eleventh century.

Ch. 639Calico Jack

Allen captured Captain Jack, a pirate displaced to the present after his ship and the Kraken destroyed each other, and restored his sunken ship with magic. Jack learned Allen could not send him back to his own age, leaving him to face the loss of his freedom to sail with a crew.

  • Allen watched Captain Jack escape his sinking boat, then confronted him on the shore at Dover.
  • Captain Jack pretended to surrender, drew a pistol, and fired at Allen, but Allen’s shadow shield stopped the bullet.
  • Allen identified him as John Jack Rackham, explained how he had arrived in the present, and introduced himself as Allen Harris.
  • Allen used magic to recover and restore Captain Jack’s three-masted ship from the sea.
  • Captain Jack thanked Allen for restoring his ship and asked to return to his own era, but Allen said the power of time would make him age rapidly.
  • Captain Jack lamented that he could not recruit sailors in this age, saying a ship meant freedom rather than merely its structure.

Ch. 640Freedom YO HO

Allen gave Captain Jack a compass that controlled tireless Skeleton Sailors, then treated his illness and asked him to visit the Holy Roman Empire. Jack sailed southwest aboard the Black Galleon with his new crew as Allen left for the north.

  • Allen enchanted the compass with the Underworld’s symbol and gave Jack skeleton sailors to command.
  • Jack used the compass to make the skeletons dance, then loaded them onto his repaired ship.
  • Allen gave Jack an ointment for his syphilis and asked him to have children in the Holy Roman Empire, especially with a girl named Grindelwald.
  • Allen said goodbye to Jack and disappeared into the shadows.
  • Jack ordered the Skeleton Sailors to their stations and sailed the Black Galleon southwest from the English Channel.
