Before the great television, the screen had returned to a field of snowy static, crackling and hissing.
Firefly was somewhat surprised. She turned to look at the illusory Gofemwood beside her, her eyes filled with inquiry.
"The Dream Master already knew back then that the Stellaron was actually a creation of the Path of Harmony?"
"And he was forced to manipulate the Stellaron only because he obeyed The Family's orders?"
Gofemwood let out a long sigh, the sound especially desolate within the empty room.
"I would like to defend him, but calling it coercion would be nothing more than self-deception..."
"He said, 'It was beyond my power,' rather than, 'Xipe taught us that we must not do this.'"
"Whatever The Family may be, this Gofemwood is no longer a believer in Harmony."
Firefly looked at him, her blue-pink eyes particularly clear beneath the faint glow of the screen.
She ventured, "What if it had been you standing there?"
Gofemwood did not hesitate, as though he had considered the question countless times already.
"Perhaps I would have forsaken Harmony as well."
"But even so, that would only mean I believed The Family was unworthy of obedience. It could never justify the great evil the Dream Master intended to commit."
"...Miss Firefly, have you ever pondered fate?" he suddenly asked, his gaze cast into the void.
"I often wonder: if we could face the choices of the past again, would we truly make different decisions?"
Gradually, a spiral staircase leading higher silently emerged on the other side of the room. Its stone steps were ancient, their edges covered in slick moss.
Glowing words once again appeared upon the rough stone walls on both sides.
