Master nodded and continued forward.
"That's right. Those lanterns can confuse the eyes. Once we pass them, don't stare at the wick for too long. As long as you don't keep staring at it, it shouldn't be much of a problem."
"I'll remember that, Master!"
Master said nothing more and led me onward.
Before long, we reached the source of the light.
It really was a half-open lantern with the character for joy pasted on it, hanging by the roadside. A red candle burned inside.
To the naked eye, it looked no different from an ordinary candle.
But under the Heavenly Eye, the lantern and red candle gave off a faint black mist.
The mist was thin enough that it would be impossible to see without looking closely...
Still, the flame was indeed somewhat strange.
Even though I was on guard, when I deliberately looked at it, I felt a captivating force pulling at me.

From this, it was clear that these lanterns could kill both people and animals.
Without precautions, if someone kept staring at them, they might lose themselves here.
