Seeing Fang Cheng staring at the heart in his hands without even blinking, as if he were looking at some precious treasure, Kanzaki Rin's anger flared up instantly.
You bastard, you said you didn't want it and even cursed at me, but in the end, aren't you just greedy?
Kanzaki Rin crossed her arms and mocked, "If you want to eat it, then eat it. No one is stopping you; there's no need to pretend you don't want it."
Kanzaki Rin's words snapped Fang Cheng back to reality.
He rubbed his eyes, and the few lines of prompts in his field of vision gradually faded away.
At this moment, Fang Cheng felt his sense of smell had become much sharper. A multitude of complex odors from the house rushed toward him, yet he could clearly distinguish the differences between every single one of them.
Clearly, this was the effect brought about by his advanced sense of smell.
As for the remaining three, their names made their functions self-explanatory. As long as he collected the fragments, he could obtain complete skills or rewards—a system identical to the reward mechanics of the mobile games he played before transmigrating.
Burning Blood and Blood of Madness were likely skills Yagawa Ryoka possessed as a vampire.
Setting those aside for now, the one Fang Cheng cared about most was the Life Fragment.
Resurrection counts were the foundation of Fang Cheng's survival. He had been searching for ways to increase them, but had come up empty-handed.
He hadn't expected to obtain a Life Fragment at a time like this, and by looting a corpse, no less.
He actually had Kanzaki Rin to thank for this. If she hadn't tossed the heart in front of him, Fang Cheng never would have thought to loot Yagawa Ryoka's body; he didn't have any perverted hobbies, after all.
However, this method of obtaining Life Fragments clearly meant he was being forced to hunt monsters to level up.
That was far too dangerous. It would be better if he could just have an AFK system like in games, where he could level up by lying in bed every day instead of having to go out and kill.
Seeing that Fang Cheng remained motionless, Kanzaki Rin spoke again, "Are you going to eat it or not? If you aren't, I'm taking it away."
Fang Cheng glanced at her and tossed the heart back at her. "Eat it yourself. I'm no savage who drinks blood and eats raw meat."
Kanzaki Rin scrambled to catch the heart, looking at Fang Cheng in shock. "You really don't want it? Don't you know that eating this can enhance your strength?"
Is that so?
Fang Cheng didn't know, and even if he did, he wouldn't eat it, because he wasn't a vampire—it would be useless to him.
He stood up and said to Kanzaki Rin with righteous indignation, "If I want power, I will strive for it myself and train for it. I won't obtain strength through such evil means."
Fang Cheng stared into Kanzaki Rin's eyes and said earnestly, "I want you to remember: even though I was bitten by a vampire, I am still a human being. I have my bottom line. Don't look at me as if I'm a monster."
Kanzaki Rin was stunned by Fang Cheng's aura, rendered speechless for a moment.
If Fang Cheng had said this before, Kanzaki Rin would have scoffed and treated it like hot air.
But now, the facts were right before her eyes; Fang Cheng was truly able to resist his instincts.
The heart was right in front of him, yet he had refused it. Making such a choice was far more difficult than running out to hunt his own kind.
It was as if a severe drug addict had used his own willpower to refuse the drugs placed right in front of him.
This was too absurd. A vampire's instinct was to prey on their own kind—something far more severe than drug addiction—yet Fang Cheng was actually able to resist such temptation.
Kanzaki Rin almost had to re-evaluate Fang Cheng. She had originally thought his willpower was just better than the average person's, but now it seemed it wasn't just better—he was practically not human at all.
"I understand. I hope you can keep your word and stick to your bottom line. I won't treat you like a monster either."
Kanzaki Rin took the initiative to reach out to Fang Cheng. "Let's start over. I'm Kanzaki Rin, an intern at the Disaster Countermeasure Department."
Fang Cheng didn't shake her hand. Instead, he put his hands on his hips and laughed, "Do you think that by shaking hands, the conflict between us will just be wiped clean?"
Kanzaki Rin frowned slightly, struggling to keep her gaze from drifting downward. "If you feel my previous actions were offensive, I can apologize to you. I was watching you day and night to protect your safety..."
"NONONO, that's not it!"
Fang Cheng raised a finger and shook it, then pointed at Yagawa Ryoka's corpse. "We can talk about other things later. How are we going to handle this?"
Kanzaki Rin had no choice but to push her doubts aside. "Leave the disposal to me."
"Alright then, you get to work. I'm going to go change my clothes."
Fang Cheng turned and headed back to the bedroom; his clothes had long since been burned away by Kanzaki Rin.
After Fang Cheng left, Kanzaki Rin secretly breathed a sigh of relief.
This guy was truly shameless, acting so composed while standing naked in front of her.
Yet, she couldn't bring it up, or it would make it seem like she cared too much.
She controlled a drone to drop a hollow package in from outside the window. After opening it, she found a silver-gray body bag inside.
Kanzaki Rin placed Yagawa Ryoka's body into the bag, waiting for nightfall to transport it away via drone.
Fang Cheng came out after changing his clothes and straightened the overturned sofa and coffee table.
He sat on the sofa, crossed his hands in front of him, and struck a classic, archaic pose.
Kanzaki Rin sat opposite him, looking troubled. "What exactly do you want? We don't have any other conflicts, do we?"
"No conflicts? Heh!"
Fang Cheng let out a cold laugh. "You keep saying you're protecting me, but in reality, you're using me as bait to lure out vampires. I'm not wrong, am I?"
Kanzaki Rin was slightly startled, not expecting Fang Cheng to see through her entrapment tactics so quickly.
She calmed down quickly and admitted, "That's correct, but I had already warned you about the danger of other vampires."
Fang Cheng cut her off: "But you did use me. If your drone hadn't been following me, I wouldn't have gone to the school and exposed my tracks."
Kanzaki Rin's expression remained calm, her tone devoid of any hint of panic: "I won't deny that I had the intention of using you, but even without me, these vampires would have come knocking sooner or later. You can't stay indoors your whole life, and at the very least, I provided you with assistance."
Fang Cheng tapped his fingers against the coffee table and scoffed: "I had already died once before you arrived. In fact, it was you who was saved by me at the critical moment. Is this 'assistance' you speak of supposed to be you collecting my corpse after the fact?"
Kanzaki Rin fell silent for a few seconds, then lowered her gaze: "That was certainly included."
It even included her own; she had prepared three body bags before coming here.
If Fang Cheng knew this, he would surely think this woman was truly ruthless and had no fear of death at all.
"If you are still dissatisfied, I can apologize to you, or even provide some form of compensation."
Kanzaki Rin was surprisingly easy to talk to, and Fang Cheng's eyes lit up the moment he heard the word compensation.
Compensation is good; I've been waiting for you to say that.
Kanzaki Rin seemed not to notice Fang Cheng's expression and continued: "Although the process was convoluted, the outcome was good. This is fortunate for both of us. Perhaps we should engage in a more productive conversation rather than blaming each other, don't you think?"
Fang Cheng immediately understood what she meant: "You still want to use me as bait?"
