The Dar Territory lay slightly east of south within the Gold Coin Federation.
This place belonged to the Dar Family. Like most nobles in the Gold Coin Federation, this family had risen from merchants. Around five or six generations ago, one of their ancestors had relied on a bit of cleverness and a pliant touch during a war—exactly what that entailed could no longer be verified, though fraud, violence, and conspiracies had surely played no small part—to earn his first pot of gold. He then began dealing in resale, smuggling, moneylending, and similar trades.
This Dar ancestor was highly skilled at business and had an excellent eye. He always managed to stab his former liege in the back at precisely the right moment. After backstabbing roughly two lieges in succession, he finally soared to greatness and became a noble entitled to own land.
At first, this ancestor had merely been a knight with an actual fief, with a viscount above him as his feudal lord. But for some unknown reason, that viscount and his family were ambushed by bandits while traveling, and the entire family tragically perished. Upon learning of this, the Dar knight flew into a rage. Not only did he mobilize every soldier in his territory, he also spent a great deal of wealth hiring adventurers, assembling a fairly sizable army to investigate his liege's death.
As the investigation continued, a vast conspiracy slowly surfaced—apparently, the only baron under the viscount's command had conspired with another knight to murder their liege.
The enraged Dar knight immediately joined forces with several other knights and launched an attack on the two conspirators. After a bloody battle, the traitors were eliminated, though one of the knights also died in the process.
