Background / History

Tom grew up at Wood Orphanage, where he learned to conceal both his emotions and his abnormal magic. As a child, he intimidated older bullies with an unnervingly calm gaze and an unexplained power, though his isolation remained apparent beneath the danger he projected. 1

Ares Phoenix first approached Tom shortly afterward and became the one person Tom gradually allowed into his guarded life. Their early association was tense and transactional, but Ares's persistence gave Tom an alternative to facing the world alone. 2

When Albus Dumbledore came to the orphanage, Tom hid behind a carefully constructed facade of a confused, powerless child.
