The corners of Luo Yun's mouth curled upward.
His smile held bloodthirsty cruelty, the satisfaction of revenge, and the lightness of someone finally free of a burden.
What the God Trial wanted him to do was the same thing he wanted to do.
It seemed these people really did deserve to die.
From that day on, the ruins of Frost Ridge City became a living hell.
Luo Yun didn't sleep, eat, or rest.
Like a tireless killing machine, he prowled the streets and alleys of Frost Ridge City, hunting down every Spirit Hall Soul Master hiding in the ruins.
He didn't need to interrogate them or confirm their identities. The moment he saw the crossed-sword insignia on a suit of white armor, the Moon Eclipse Sword would leave its sheath.
No one could take a single blow from him. No one could escape his Moon Eclipse Sword. No one could keep their wits in his Divine Slaughter's Domain.
On the first day, he killed two hundred and thirty-seven people.
Corpses littered the ruins. Some lay beside collapsed walls, some sprawled across charred beams, and others curled up in shadowy corners.
Blood ran out from all sides of the ruins, gathering into dark-red rivulets that flowed down the sloping streets and pooled in the low spots.
On the second day, he killed another one hundred and eighty-nine people.
Some tried to flee, escaping the bounds of Frost Ridge City and making for the south.
Luo Yun spread his Destruction Wings and pursued them for thirty miles. He cleaved the last fleeing Soul Master in half in midair, and the body fell into the wilderness.
Luo Yun hovered in the air, watching the corpse hit the ground. His scarlet eyes showed no emotion. Then he turned and flew back to Frost Ridge City.
On the third day, Ghost Leopard Douluo and Demon Bear Douluo returned from the Far North.
Two figures streaked through the southern sky at tremendous speed, leaving behind two visible trails in the air.
Luo Yun sat atop a pile of ruins in the center of Frost Ridge City, surrounded by mountains of corpses.
He had killed more than four hundred people. By the end, there was nowhere left to put the bodies, so he stacked them one by one into a little mountain.
He sat at the very top, the Moon Eclipse Sword stabbed into the pile beside him. Resting his chin in one hand, he stared motionlessly at the two figures drawing closer in the sky, his eyes scarlet.
Ghost Leopard Douluo was the first to land.
His Martial Soul was the Nether Ghost Leopard. He was a speed-type Titled Douluo, ranked ninety-two.
He touched down almost without a sound.
His first instinct wasn't to look at the child sitting on the corpse pile, but to survey his surroundings. There were corpses everywhere, scraps of Spirit Hall Soul Masters' armor everywhere, and dried bloodstains everywhere.
His pupils shrank to pinpricks, and a chill shot from the soles of his feet straight to his scalp.
The second figure landed.
Demon Bear Douluo, a strength-type Titled Douluo, ranked ninety-one.
He was as huge as a moving hill, and the ground trembled when he landed.
His gaze swept over the corpses covering the ground. The look on his face shifted from nonchalance to solemnity, then from solemnity to barely contained fury.
He abruptly raised his head and stared at the small, dark-purple figure atop the corpse pile. A low growl rumbled in his throat.
"Did you do this?" Demon Bear Douluo's voice sounded wrenched from the back of his throat. Every word dripped with murderous intent.
Luo Yun sat atop the pile of corpses, looking down at the two Titled Douluo with emotionless scarlet eyes.
He didn't answer or even blink. He simply watched them as if they were two corpses that hadn't yet drawn their last breath.
Ghost Leopard Douluo's gaze lingered on Luo Yun for several breaths, then shifted to the mountain of corpses beneath him. His Adam's apple bobbed, and he couldn't help swallowing.
In all his years, he had seen countless ruthless killers and battlefields drenched in blood. But he had never seen a six-year-old child sitting atop a pile of corpses, looking as calm as if he were sunbathing in his own garden.
"Is this kid... still human?" Ghost Leopard Douluo's voice trembled. "He's really not a ghost?"
Demon Bear Douluo snorted, the sound booming like thunder.
He clenched his fists until his knuckles cracked, trying to steel himself.
What was there to fear in a six-year-old brat?
So what if he was the heir to a god's legacy? So what if he had Twin Martial Souls? So what if he had killed more than four hundred low-ranking Soul Masters?
And? He was a Titled Douluo—a ninety-first-ranked Titled Douluo. Was he really going to fear a six-year-old child?
He strode toward Luo Yun, each of his steps heavy enough to make the ground shudder.
As he walked, he hurled insults, his voice growing louder and nastier with every word.
"Little bastard, do you even know whose people you killed? You little brat think you can go against Spirit Hall just because you've got a bit of skill? Your father's a Titled Douluo, and we drove him off like a dog. What makes you think you're anything?"
Demon Bear Douluo reached the corpse pile and looked up at Luo Yun sitting at the top. His fleshy face twisted with anger, his eyes bloodshot. He looked more like a demon than Luo Yun did.
"If you know what's good for you, climb down and kneel before me. Bow your head three times, and I might let you die quickly. Otherwise..."
Luo Yun's eyes shifted.
Demon Bear Douluo didn't finish speaking.
The sky changed.
The clear sky darkened in an instant, as if an invisible giant hand had covered the sun.
Dark clouds surged in from every direction, gathering above Frost Ridge City into a huge vortex. Its center was directly above Luo Yun.
Purple-red lightning churned in the clouds, roaring like thunder as if it were giving birth to something terrifying.
Demon Bear Douluo's voice caught in his throat.
He looked up at the enormous vortex of lightning in the sky, his pupils shrinking to pinpricks.
His instincts told him that those bolts could threaten his life directly.
But he had no time to be afraid.
Luo Yun raised a hand slightly, as casually as if shooing away a fly.
The vortex of lightning in the sky erupted into a frenzy. Purple-red bolts churned wildly through the dark clouds, then a thick bolt, as mighty as a giant dragon, crashed down from the vortex's center, striking straight at Demon Bear Douluo.
Demon Bear Douluo's reaction was undeniably fast.
His Ninth Soul Ring lit up, black light swirling around him;
His Seventh Soul Ring lit up—Demon Bear Avatar.
His body instantly swelled to three times its size. A thick, rocklike layer of hard plating covered his skin, transforming him into a true giant bear.
He crossed his arms above his head, concentrating all his Soul Power in them as he prepared to take the blow head-on.
The lightning struck.
Boom!
The deafening blast shook the ruins of Frost Ridge City. Gravel pattered from the collapsed walls, and dust billowed up, blotting out the sky.
The shock wave drove Ghost Leopard Douluo back more than a dozen steps. He raised both hands in front of his face and squinted toward the spot where the lightning had struck.
