Background

Eve was born after the Glorious War, following the deaths of her three older brothers in battle. Their loss left the Phoenix family steeped in grief, while Eve was raised as its cherished surviving child. Her mother later died of illness, leaving Eve the ruby necklace that Duke Evra Phoenix had given her at their marriage. 12 32

As the daughter of Duke Evra Phoenix, Eve is expected to become the next Phoenix Duchess. Rather than accept a sheltered noble life, she secretly entered Suaran Hall to become a detective and pursue achievements worthy of her family’s legacy. Her father strongly opposes this choice, having lost too much of the family to war. 12 13

Her early detective career begins with Wall’s case. On her first day, she catches Lorenzo Holmes intruding in the morgue and holds him at gunpoint, but the two are trapped together when the building is set ablaze. 5 6

Appearance

Eve is a young noblewoman whose refined appearance often contrasts sharply with her readiness for violence. She keeps her weapons concealed beneath formal dresses and can rapidly change into combat clothing when necessary. 14 15 26

  • Long red hair, described as burning like fire. 46
  • Usually presents herself with a heroic, guarded demeanor that discourages unwanted noble suitors. 46
  • Wears the Phoenix family’s ruby necklace, inscribed with the family motto, “Ember Rekindled.” 11 12
  • Conceals pistols, daggers, and other weapons beneath her skirts using thigh ribbons. 13 14 15
  • Uses masks and formal attire while infiltrating high-society criminal gatherings. 16

Personality

Eve is ambitious, stubborn, and intensely determined to establish herself as a detective rather than live solely as a Phoenix noble. She wants to earn honors comparable to those of her ancestors, even when pursuing that dream places her career, safety, and family standing at risk. 13 16

Though initially inexperienced and easily shaken by the violence of Old Dunling’s underworld, she has strong instincts and adapts quickly. She suspects Lorenzo in the morgue, senses danger aboard the Iron Snake and the ghostly Steam Tram, and repeatedly acts despite fear. 5 7 15

Eve retains a stronger concern for law and procedure than Lorenzo. She questions his willingness to kidnap or manipulate suspects, resents being used in his schemes, and distrusts the secretive knowledge he withholds. 14 26 28

Her encounter with Fiends forces her to confront terror directly. Rather than collapse, she fights through severe wounds and fear to survive until Lorenzo reaches her, discovering a fierce courage rooted in both her family history and her refusal to disgrace the Phoenix name. 32 33

Abilities & Skills

Marksmanship

Eve is trained in firearms through the police academy and is an accurate close-range shooter.

  • Earned a perfect score in police-academy shooting courses. 32
  • Fires effectively while under extreme pressure, including striking a Fiend’s head in darkness. 32
  • Uses the silver revolver Death Knell against monsters during the train outbreak. 46 50
  • Her inexperience initially leaves her uncertain about when she is legally or tactically justified in firing. 7

Concealed Combat and Improvisation

Eve routinely carries weapons beneath formal clothing and can use deception or improvised tools to overcome human opponents.

  • Keeps pistols and daggers hidden in thigh ribbons beneath dresses. 13 14 15
  • Carries fitted combat clothing beneath formal attire, allowing her to discard the dress and fight. 15 26
  • Escapes house arrest by deceiving guards, using a concealed chair leg to incapacitate them, and disguising herself to reach a train. 46
  • Can handle Lorenzo’s Winchester, though its weight is difficult for her. 26

Instinct and Investigation

Eve possesses unusually sharp instincts, though her detective experience is still limited.

  • Detects Lorenzo’s presence in the morgue and catches him searching Wall’s corpse. 5
  • Senses that Lorenzo’s actions aboard the Iron Snake are dangerous before he forces the tram beyond its civilian limits. 7
  • Notices the absence of guards at the Feast of Bliss after Lorenzo draws her attention to it. 19

Secret Blood and Spirit Sight

Eve’s stable Secret Blood makes her a qualified person and gives her an abnormal connection to Fiends.

  • Her wounds heal at an unnaturally visible rate after the Underground Palace incident. 39 40
  • She can potentially become a Medium: someone able to see demons and be seen by them. 40
  • Her Spirit Sight allows her to perceive monsters that ordinary people cannot, but also makes her a target for them. 46 49
  • Her connection to darkness is dangerous; Lorenzo warns that deeper knowledge and contact will intensify it. 40
  • Lorenzo believes that an uncontrolled awakening of her Secret Blood would erode her into a monster within a minute or two. 50

Fiend Survival

Eve learns to resist the panic and mental pressure caused by Fiends, though she remains vulnerable to their influence.

  • Follows Lorenzo’s advice to adapt to fear rather than surrender to it. 32
  • Kills or severely wounds a Fiend by firing Death Knell from inside its mouthparts. 32
