Background / History

Sabo was a deformed Viking who described himself as having been abandoned by his mother and “the gods” from birth. He survived the northern seas, lost three fingers in exchange for passage to Inverwig, and was rescued after drifting ashore from a wreck. A priest introduced him to the Gospel Church, though Sabo ultimately regarded faith as futile. 18 34

He was present during the Red River Massacre six years before the Feast of Bliss. The upheaval reshaped the Lower District and enabled him to rise as the leader of the Green Shark gang; he regarded Lorenzo Holmes, who caused the massacre, as an unwitting benefactor. 22

Because his dwarf body could not easily command fear among outlaws, Sabo ruled through the identity of the Bull mask and employed a physically imposing double to publicly represent him. At the Feast of Bliss, the guests accepted whoever wore the mask as Sabo, allowing the real gang leader to remain concealed. 20 22

Before the ball, the Plague Doctor offered Sabo purified Secret Blood in exchange for creating a diversion that would delay the Purification Agency's pursuit of the Sacred Coffin. Sabo accepted, intending to turn the masked nobles and smugglers attending his ball into “funeral offerings.” 18

Sabo's true body was short, malformed, and physically frail. He concealed this appearance beneath the imposing identity of the Bull mask and a larger double. 20 22

Sabo was calm, candid, and controlled when he held the advantage. He could speak matter-of-factly about his own deformity, his crimes, and his imminent death, treating even lethal games as negotiations between equals. 19 22 24

His central drive was survival. Having lived with abandonment, illness, and contempt, Sabo saw life as his sole possession and was willing to use deception, hallucinogens, murder, and Secret Blood to preserve it. He found exhilaration in narrowly escaping death, regarding the terror of gambling as proof that he was alive. 22 24 34 38

Despite his ruthlessness, Sabo retained a degree of humanity after mutating. He identified Lorenzo as someone like himself, sought to be understood by him, and ultimately asked him for prayer while dying. 34 37 38
